Since characters don't have levels in the traditional sense, is physical level going to be the measure of when you can equip a given armor/weapon?
Think Final Fantasy II.
Spoiler: show
Physical levels sound like the normal levelling system, lol. I'm kinda disappointed, but I knew it would be way too difficult to balance without some kind of physical level outside of your skill in a weapon.
The character progression system sounds almost exactly like what they did in Final Fantasy X-2. You got exp to progress your physical level (level 10, 21, 33, 99 etc) and got CP to enhance your job skills which you had the option of choosing which skill to learn next, like FF8 with GF traits.
Really thats how i see it, the exception being job traits/abilities can bleed over into your current "class" depending how well those traits/abilities work with your current weapon. So for example, a Thaumaturge will be more likely to utilize his Conjurer skills rather than the skills he has learned using a sword (Gladiator).
So now say this guy using his sword tries to cast a Cure spell on himself to heal himself faster. He goes into passive mode, changes his weapon to a wand (one of the conjurer arms) and cures himself up. I suspect there will be restrictions to this system, as buffing yourself as the buffer class (i suspect its yet to be announced) and switching to a damage dealer class just sounds broken.
Now obviously weapons themselves will prove to have limitations. A Marauder will be unable to perform the Wide Volley attack he has learned while using a bow. Likewise, a Lancer will be unable to perform the shield bash skill hes learned while utilizing a sword and shield. Just thinking like this can really give you a better idea of how this game is going to work.
This skill system seems interesting. Subjobs, but not quite subjobs. Sounds fun and like there will be more freedom to customize your character. Guess we'll find out in time.
I was really mystified when Square Enix came out saying that "there won't be any levels" because i was constantly thinking about how it could actually work. When you want to invite a player to your experience points party, there just has to be an easy way to judge another players level of progression. I constantly ran into brick walls trying to figure out a system to quickly judge anohter players level of progression and came to the conclusion that either there would be some really crazy, genious, revolutionary system for this to actually be possible. Now, there's going to be physical levels and it all makes perfect sense, we'll be able to see another players level and their skill rank and this in turn will let us be able to quickly determine another players level of progression.
Although this time weapon skills are much more important, since it seems mostly everything from abilities to skills to spells are learned that way.
The skills themselves might be able to be leveled as well. I remember seeing a pic from gamescom that showed abilities for Gladiator, one of them being "red lotus blade level 3" or something similar. Maybe there's a talent tree-type feature.
I think they kinda reversed the whole progression system from XI. Physical levels have less importance, and skill levels have more.
To the people who are thinking FFXIV is going to be just skillup parties to level up, its not.
FFXIV != FFXI
we aren't going to know specifics until we the alpha begins, but i have strong faith the end result is going to be the same goal they have been stating, only the means to achieve the goal will be changed based on feedback and findings.
I forgot that they are doing FULL wipes in between each stage of testing. So if ppl get to keep their beta names then it won't be until open beta. Anything other than that is just blatantly unfair since ppl don't have a chance unless you get picked for testing, so it makes sense for them to do it that way if they decide to let you keep your beta names to retail
So this isn't really a closed beta but more of a closed alpha right? So after SE makes some fixes, we will get the beta, (closed again?) , moar fixes, then open beta, then retail?
Closed Alpha > Closed Beta > Open Beta > Retail.
Length of betas will be determined when it happens heh.
Well the title of this thread adds confusion... Implying that ff14 is in the closed beta stage and is live right now. I was just wondering.
title may be misleading, but if you have been following the game at all you know alpha is first, then closed beta. Head was bitten off because it doesnt take reading an entire thread to figure this out, maybe one page back will give all the info thats needed... 2 pages back for full clarification. But I mean going back less then 10 posts from poster shows that alpha is starting next week.. and a few posts back because then are about alpha starting.
Hopefully the beta wont last as long as Ragnarok Online 2s!
