The Spanish I can speak/understand is what I picked up from my parents/family.

Its a well known problem. American Latinos are often chastised in their ancestral homelands for exactly this reason. The reason this problem exists is two prong. Immigrant Parent's emphasize Learning English while settling with just being able to communicate with their children in terms of Spanish and most American Latinos also aren't really motivated to learn spanish because they figure they know 'enough to get by'. They also don't seem to know the benefit of studying a language they believe they already know. It's not until they have a conversation with a fluent Spanish speaker that they realize they really don't know shit. I put myself in this category regrettably. If I had a time machine I'd do things differently.

Often parents Hispanic parents in America won't teach their children Spanish at all in America because of how divisive language is in America. The parents themselves have often felt ostracized because they speak English poorly and so they go to the opposite extreme and don't teach their children Spanish at all. It's a shame and I actually think that all American children should learn Spanish as well as other languages in Elementary School, but that is generations away from getting any support.

I don't know about Mexico, but English is a requirement in Puerto Rico. The reasons are obvious.

English specifically? Or just a foreign language? I mean, we're required to learn a foreign language when seeking higher education here as well. In China though, for example, they're specifically required to learn English at lower levels of the education system.

The owner, Arye Sachs, is looking for people to volunteer to cart one of his missiles back and forth to the site of the proposed mosque, starting on Sept. 2.

He is "donating" two missiles, and his time, "to fight the proposed mosque on Ground Zero."

"This proposed Mosque is clearly to instigate and mock non-radical fundamentalist Americans living and visiting this sacred area. As such, this must be stopped," it reads, in part. Sachs also says any protests are "NOT about a one day event or one day protest. This must be a long protest campaign to halt all those involved in the request and approval process of that mosque."
