RPC Votes Besaid As Role Play Server

The Final Fantasy XIV Role-Play Coalition is excited to finally announce the unofficial RP server! After a vote in which over 15 role-play linkshells and numerous freelancers took part in, Besaid has been named the unofficial RP server.

This is a courtesy announcement for those who may be interested in RP as well as for those who want to outright avoid it.

The unofficial RP server will house over 500 role-players but we certainly hope to have wonderful interactions with those of you less interested in RP as well.

As the only special interest server, Besaid will differ in certain ways compared to your standard server. Large-scale events will be held from time to time (and we hope non-RPers find a way to enjoy them as much as we do!). The role-players will also strive to create a living environment full of varying degrees of immersion. While still a minority, we will be a larger minority on the chosen server. Thus, new RP linkshells are strongly encouraged to join this server even if they do not wish to be a member of the Role-Play Coalition itself. We all know that having like-minded individuals enjoying role-play alongside you on a day to day basis helps keep the community, and by extension, your linkshell, strong. The RPC strongly advocates having a positive relationship with the non-RPers that happen share the same server as us. We will be as respectful as possible to the non-RPers and we ask to receive the same treatment in return. We look forward to the many friendships and interactions we will have with the non-RP community of our chosen server and hope you feel the same as well. 500 players amongst an entire server isn't even significant in FFXI terms, and that assumes no one quits. the most significant "impact" this is likely to have is to make this server a good choice at launch because "eww rp server" will scare retards off so the starting areas won't be as crowded. more likely outcome: it makes no difference.

I have never actually RPed really on ffxi, so I am really really curious to see exactly what RPing involves in an MMO...?

It's pretty simple. You don't talk like you're controlling your character (i.e. "What job am I bringing to sea? SAM? k sweet, let me change in my MH"). You talk like you ARE your character ("How can I best support the team in Lumoria? You'd like the aid of my sword, Singingedge? Very well--my sword you shall have. Allow me some time to ready my equipment first.")

No abbreviations unless you feel like your character would use them. No talk of the meta-game--things like "experience points" or "skill points" or "stat allocation" or "STR+5" or "level up" are senseless to a living, breathing character. You have to explain things like proving yourself in battle, feeling like this new armor is so well-suited to you that you have a stronger swing because of it, and feeling sure that you've trained enough that the guild will grant you an increased rank.

Long story short, nothing really changes and it's a lot more trouble than it's worth unless you like to tell stories and form relationships that are even more fictional than the ones we already have.

RP = bringing a fanfiction to life within the confines of a game.

I don't mind it, as it gives people something to do when grinding is boring in the early life of games, but I've always gotten out of it once a game was established enough so that there was always something decent to do.

RP means playing a miqote gladiator but never upgrading from the weathered gladius (because in-character it belonged to your mother) and not expanding out to get skills from pugilist or marauder (because your character "only uses a sword").

Seriously, just like in tabletop gaming, roleplaying has a serious limitation: it is the practice of playing a simplistic, one-dimensional, caricature rather than a complex interesting character. People can only keep up a character that is less complex than they themselves are. And less intelligent, 'cause seriously who's gonna role 18 INT/WIS/CHA without being a real-life bodhisattva? Ergo, RP is for furries and cybersex and fauxtastic british accents. Also poorly-written tranny erotica where the author-character is either Jesus or Faust fanfiction.

In fact, in the entire history of MMORPGs, there has only been one instance of non-sucky RP:

So far by overwhelming majority the RPers I've met (I joined the RPC and I'm going to RP in XIV at my girlfriend's behest) are cooler and more mature than the average player. RPing for them is not like playing pretend, but is instead more of a creative writing activity. It's a process of developing characters and plots and observing how they actually play out when you add other characters that you can't control to the mix.

And since XIV looks like it will be an underwhelming game at release, particularly content-wise, I think adding the timeless art of writing to the game will be a welcome addition.

Though I've heard of some awful RP in other games, it seems like Final Fantasy, true to its legacy, attracts a more "hardcore" RP crowd. Crap RP is about as desired as a crap loljob in your xp party. Though rather than lolnoob, the criticism seems more constructive.

I ended up in an RP server in WoW once, my account was hacked and the idiot who stole it xfered my character to an RP server, so when I got it back I was stuck there for a while (this was back when there was a 3 month cooldown on transfers). Most people actually didn't RP, and when they did they went into their own little corner and didn't bother anyone else, it wasn't a big deal. After a while I didn't even notice I was on an RP server, however I still xfered out as soon as I was able to.
