Just make the machine powerful instead of gimmicky and I'm happy.

The games can be 'original' then. Patapon is awesome.

This. I hope they don't ruin this with some weird gimmicks. Touch controls ruined quite a few games for the DS, for every game that did touch controls right there was 50 that did them poorly.

They did that with the PSP, and look how well that turned out.......

Sony is going to want a bigger slice of the pie that Nintendo has been, and will continue to hog, they're going to try something different this time.
(preferably with no reliance on UMD this time around....or a fucking faster UMD drive)

    Quite well from my PoV.

But yeah, I can see them doing the exact opposite now. Sadly.

Quite well? The system had nearly three years without any real flow of titles. It's only been in the last year that the PSP has seen a bit of a resurgence.

And that's not including all the monthly sales charts for North America where the PSP just sits near the bottom.

On a side note, regarding the PSP Phone, I wouldn't be surprised if that ends up being the PSP2, but beefier hardware specs. PSP1 was toted as being a multi-purpose device (photos, videos, music, gaming, wifi-net surfing......slowly), so why not extend that for the PSP2. ;/
(thinking in business terms here, given the general public seems to like shit that only 'does everything', since obviously the majority of us would just use it for games)

I'm gonna tell you the one and only reason PSP didn't do better (and it's not a lack of good games). It's the fact that Nintendo had the only real recognizable name in the handheld market. They've been doing handhelds since for-fucking-ever and it's hard to compete with brand loyalty when this is your first foray into the handheld market and your competitor has been at it for ages.

PSP is the only and I do mean ONLY handheld to be able to compete, even if it's doing poorly in comparison, every other handheld put up against Nintendo has bombed much much harder than this. PSP's had good games coming out for it every single year of its release, often more actual good games than the DS... the DS sells more because it's Nintendo, really. It's not game quality, it's not the touch screen. It's brand loyalty.

I dunno what you are talking about man I've been using my PSP consistently since it came out and have many more games for it than I do my DS. It's a cool frickin' system.

I think I post this in every psp vs ds argument, but I think because people only shop at gamestop, they fail to see how the majority of consumers buy video game handhelds. I'd say definently more than half DONT go to gamestop and go to other retailers and buy nintendo DS's because of the audience it caters to. Then that audience either never upgrades(except with another DS) or moves straight to a home system, and very few decide they want ANOTHER handheld. This fact alone adds a huge amount of sales to the DS, and has very little to do with which piece of hardware is better.

I always joke about when Activision or Ubisoft comes out with a new "casual" or "kiddy" game, but I still sell just as many of those as any other game over the course of a year.

This. Easily the best investment I've made from a gaming standpoint.

I dont know about you, but the only reason i didnt get a psp until just recently was the price. When i bought the ds at launch it was considerably cheaper then the psp. Even now the price i paid for at launch for a ds is still cheaper then a core psp right now. It wasnt until there were a number of games i really wanted on the psp that moved me to buy it.

Yeah but one or two individuals don't make or break a game system. I mean me and 3 of my friends all purchased Virtual boys back in the day. That and my Sega Saturn were my 2 best investments in my entire life up to that point, and you see how well that worked out. Just because a handful of people think its the god mode of gaming, doesn't make it true, nor the "best".

I mean if you ask me NIS and Atlus titles are the hands down best titles on the market, im sure others would disagree. Those companies alone make having a PSP worth it in my opinion, fuck other titles.

I agree with Shojin and everyone ahead of me, that basically everyone works with the same template but tries to add something they perceive as unique in order to distinguish themselves from the other brands. But you and I both know, had this been about a MS hand held yall bitchs would be all hoopin and hollerin and raising cain about how unoriginal MS was lol. I agree but I have to laugh at the hypocrisy though, it never ceases to amaze.

PSP is for porn and nothing else. Give me touch controls and a faster OS.

    ....So I can stream porn.

Honestly a second analogue stick is all it would take to sell me. PSP is already fantastic and that is the one real downer to the system. I don't give a fuck about some touch screen gimmicks or anything of the sort, a second analogue would fix all the issues for so many games.

For me at least (and I'd assume for a lot of people,) I simply can't afford to own TWO handheld systems. Hell I don't even own a DS, I just use my brother's and buy my own games for that. So people like me just make a choice...and the DS had a much better selection of games back then (and still imo.) I'd love to play KH: Birth by sleep, but I simply can't afford to buy a PSP when there are only 1 or 2 games I'm interested in playing.

Also the whole UMD movie thing was obviously not the greatest idea. I'm sure they were counting on the success of that to make the whole thing more profitable.

I suppose they could try adding 4 shoulder buttons instead of 2. Not sure how it'd work if they are still going the slim route, unless they arrange the shoulder buttons like the Wii classic controller does.

or they could make it so the touch acts as a mouse pad scrolling the camera around, who knows it could work out great

    Kotaku troll post or what?

PSP2 Hits Next Fall With Dual Analog Sticks, Touch Pad and Bigger Screen

Around the time of the Tokyo Game Show, Sony held a private meeting at its offices in Tokyo's Aoyama. The purpose was to show off the PSP2.

Several sources have confirmed to Kotaku that the PSP2 does have a previously rumored touch panel on the back of the hardware. The touch panel was described as looking like a big mouse trackpad. When Sony showed the PSP2, it did not provide concrete details regarding how the trackpad will be implemented in games and instead is leaving that to the discretion of game developers.

The screen itself is not only sharper than the current PSP's, but about an inch larger. The larger screen means that the PSP2 will be larger as well. In the private meetings, Sony is touting the screen as "HD".

A larger PSP should not be that big of an issue for Sony — especially in a mobile environment with large tablets like the iPad. It also shows that Sony realizes it is no longer simply competing with Nintendo, but also Apple.

It is unclear whether this is the same handheld described by the Wall Street Journal. According to the paper, Sony is working on a device that mixes a game player, an e-book reader and a netbook computer.

In late September, there were also reports that the PSP2 hardware was in the hands of "numerous" developers.

Currently, the PSP2's hardware is not finalized, and Sony is having problems balancing battery, power and heat. There are apparently overheating issues, but Sony is, of course, aiming to have those issues corrected by the time the hardware is publicly shown.

Sony set the PSP2's goals (what Sony wants it to do), but is still tinkering with the portable's innards. The PSP2's tech specs are expected to change, meaning that things like chip size and processor size are variable.

Sources tell Kotaku that the PSP2's release window is fall 2011. Sony is not yet talking openly about the PSP2.

Sony did not offer a comment in time for publication.

NOTE: The above image is not a picture of the new device just one of many fan-created mock-ups of a new PSP.

Incoming 4 hours max battery. Not that 4 hours use on something like this would be entirely bad. I'd actually be surprised if they did ps3 graphics on 4 hours battery.
