I very much enjoyed the first two and thought the third kinda sucked. Kate's the star of this franchise, and without her it seemed kinda lame.

The next underworld will continue where Selene/Michael left off.

Beckinsale seems to get type casted in these types of roles since the success of the underworld films. Previous interviews suggest she was very hesitant to dawn the leather-clad body suit again unless they "came up with an amazing script".

The Underworld movie franchise isn’t over yet.

Just last Thursday, the producers announced in a press release that there will be a fourth movie, and not only that. The release also confirmed that Kate Beckinsale is returning as the lead character Selene, which this time now has a daughter.

There are still no news about Underworld 4’s story and its full cast. The filmmakers haven’t even named a director for the film.

According to Cinema Blend, only the movie’s script, written by John Hlavin (The Shield) with revisions by J. Michael Straczynski (Changeling, Babylon 5, Ninja Assassin), is ready at this time, and the producers are seeking an actress who will play as Selene’s daughter. Screen Rant also reports that the continuing battle between vampires and werewolves will be shot in 3D.

Filming will start in March 2011 in Vancouver, and Underworld 4 is expected to be released in January 2012. (Other source: Star Life Talk and Gossip)

The official title of the fourth installment of the Underworld franchise is Underworld: The New Dawn! News has been scarce since it was announced that Swedish directors Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein had been hired to direct the film.

Synopsis:

THE NEW DAWN centers on the vampire Selene (Kate Beckinsale), who awakens after being in a 15 year coma. She soon discovers that she has a fourteen-year-old vampire/Lycan hybrid daughter, Nissa, and when she finds her, they must stop BioCom from creating super Lycans that will kill them all.

Filming is expected to begin in Vancouver this March. The film is set for a January 20, 2012 release date.

Kate Beckinsale is so tiny that, for me, she just doesn't pull off the female action heroine that Milla Jovovich and Angelina Jolie can. Don't get me wrong though, I enjoyed the Underworld films because I like action films with badass female leads, even the bad ones. I'm really surprised that she's doing another one because I thought the Underworld series had been played out. I'll go see this though because I like watching girls in tight leather hooker boots shooting people.
