Music Friday: Undertale's Final Battle

Rate this Entry

Hello! Let’s all tread together the treacherous path of the final day of the work week joined by some great music!

You knew this day would come! Today I will share the themes (yes, plural) from Undertale's true final battle. SPOILERS!

Undertale, the little 8-bitish RPG that took the gaming world by surprise late last year has, in my opinion, one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard. It also has three endings, and I am legitimately concerned there may be people out there that only got the regular, normal ending. There's a "Genocide" ending for killing basically everything, and a "Pacifist" ending that can only be unlocked after finished the normal way, then going back and tying a few loose ends. The final Pacifist battle is amazing, and I want to talk about it in detail in another post someday, but it basically has three phases. The first one's theme is the one above.

The final boss of the game turns out to be a character referenced through much of the story but presumed dead - that is, until you realize it was the little flower that greets you at the very beginning of the game. In the first stage of the fight, you must fight against this individual with all his might, after having absorbed all life and power in the Underworld. The last phase is about releasing the souls of your friends who are now trapped inside. This is the theme for that part:

I love how both themes complement each other so well. The first one ("Hopes and Dreams") is almost formulaic, but fits so well with the "this is the final battle" idea. The other one ("SAVE the World") just ramps it up, because at this point you're saving your friends and enter the decisive part of the battle. Another cool detail is that both themes are peppered with references to Flowey the Flower's Theme, which is only logical.

Man, Undertale has such good music, particularly the boss battles, including what is likely my favorite song of 2015.

Game on!
