Full Body Scanners - Good or Bad?

A bunch of airports in Canada are getting those full body scanner things to scan for terrorist bombs on flights to the U.S. When the news stories came out that they had been invented and were on the market, a lot of people were protesting their use. Days after the Christmas Day bombing attempt, the government was clamouring for them and announced that eight larger airports were going to get the scanners. The public has capitulated and smaller airports are worried they're not getting them.

Some people I've talked to believe that it's a good thing for safety. Others believe that it is a huge invasion of privacy. What does BG think? Do the scanners make air travel safer? Or do they restrict the individual's rights even more?

Also, it should be noted that the scanners are only going to be used on suspicious people meeting a profile, and that they can refuse them in favour of frisking. However, the scanners will not be used on childern under the age of 18 in fear of breaking child pornography laws, so they have some level of indecency attached.

Scanners don't see shit, people just don't want them to see their drugs.

Honestly, it really does not matter what the "public" thinks of them, if you don't like them you can drive to your destination. Also, if this reduces my wait time to get on a flight I'm all for it.

    Good thing.

I have nothing to hide. Plus those people probably scan so much everyday they probably do not care you have a 20inch black prince cock inside your suitcase, just bombs and relevant material.

don't really care for the scanners, as a foreigner i've have to deal with international security all the time, if this avoids me getting pad down and aroused by the hot sweety border police, im game

I just wonder what sort of long term health being exposed to something like this could create. (I'm just stepulating i got no clue what type of tech they use)

This is the wrong way to think about it.

Unless you want me to try and drive over the Atlantic, your opinion is ignorant.

It is severely debilitating to personal rights to have to give in to ever-increasing security presences. No matter what security devices are used, for those willing to give their lives, there will always be a way around them. At what end will they stop forcing more security on us?

Of course the promise is faster check-in, but it will never be faster. Just imagine all the people who forget to remove things from their pockets, and how they have to keep going back and forth, and the line it will create. The cost of the machines will dictate there always being fewer than needed.

It's a severe headache that is not justified.

    Yep.

    From Maureen Dowd's 12/30/09 Op-Ed piece.

If we can’t catch a Nigerian with a powerful explosive powder in his oddly feminine-looking underpants and a syringe full of acid, a man whose own father had alerted the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, a traveler whose ticket was paid for in cash and who didn’t check bags, whose visa renewal had been denied by the British, who had studied Arabic in Al Qaeda sanctuary Yemen, whose name was on a counterterrorism watch list, who can we catch?
This guy didn't even show a fucking passport.

Clearly the solution is full-body scanners. We need more theater disguised as security. Why be effective when you can just give the appearance of being effective?

Flying in planes is not necessarily a right by any means. I see this the same way I see red light cameras. Yes they are there, yes they are annoying, but they do have benefits, that tend to outweigh the drawbacks. I just can't see how a vague outline of your body that could save lives is as big a deal as people are making it to be.

As to your second post, the whole thing needs a damn re-haul, this is not the stand alone answer, but it is a start.

to add on to the OP, canada is picking up 46 iirc of the machines and they cost about 250k a pop. i for one being canadian think its a huge waste of tax payer dollars because we dont have a fucking terrorism problem.

if our neighbors werent such a fucking target those tax dollars could have went into programs that help the people like education or roads and highways.

no idea what these new fangled scanners will really see, i sure dont want some fags laughing at my small dick thats for sure

Would you support full body cavity searches for all passengers?

No, because that would make the lines/waits even longer. The fact you made that statement means you believe them using scanners will lead to more invasive approaches. The fact that full pat downs are already done to people makes that moot. If anything I think the scanner would reduce "full body searches".

Yeah but you can also see a gun, which is why I have no problem with this technology and would gladly volunteer to use it.

The only reason you could possibly have something against these devices if you have something to hide - be it a small penis, breast enlargements or a bomb. If you're against this, you're basically advocating terrorist attacks on planes.

People saying it's an invasion of privacy are stupid, because the only people who will see this anonymous white outline of your genitalia are in another room with no direct contact with anyone outside the room besides a small switchboard with buttons on them.

    Good thing.

Those images are not that bad no matter how bad a stink people want to make about them. The detail is not much more revealing then what you can tell from looking at them in clothes anyway.

Let's take a logical approach to this.

The first step was after someone had explosives in his shoes. Authorities then forced everyone to remove their shoes. The public (consisting of some critics and some security experts) cried out at the apparent silliness involved, but the answer was that we need to deal with such inconveniences for the sake of security.

We now have explosives brought into a plane by way of underwear. Authorities suggest viewing naked pictures of every passenger.

It is far from clear that such body scanner will even be able to detect explosives in the way that this Nigerian concealed his. If they were hidden against his body close enough, it's still not clear whether or not they could be detected by these full body scanners, let alone the sense of the operators in being able to detect the difference between body matter and explosives in regions where this Nigerian had hidden his.

However, if these potential terrorists perceive that these scanners will work, the next logical step will have them hiding the explosives in their body cavities. We already have evidence of this happening in Saudi Arabia. It's only a matter of time.

Do you see where this is headed?

You mean terrorists will adapt to anything we try to do to stop them? You're right, I guess we should just stop trying then?

There is no perfect system as anyone can tell you. If someone wants to hide a bomb by eating it or sewing it in their body (see THE DARK KNIGHT) they will and will more than likely get through the security check point.

The point is, make things as hard as possible for that to happen, and it will happen less often. There is no sure proof thing. I'm all for people not interfering with my privacy, but I'm also all for reducing the terrorists opportunities.

Want an example; see hacking firmwares on a psp, no matter how many holes you plug another leak will be found. Then that hole will be plugged, and it will happen again. All you can do is continue to fix things.
