I don't get the complaints honestly. This is not even an MMO but simply a normal DQ game with online multiplayer.

    SD Card, duh.

I'm just mainly curious about interaction with other players. All the videos are taken down.

Most popular in Japan. That's my entire point. DQ has been modestly popular in the rest of the world, and rabidly popular in Japan. Japan can barely even be considered a top-10 market for profitability when it comes to gaming. Putting out a game that's really only popular in Japan utilizing an old-school MMO design and powered by not only a system that's not that popular for online use, not to mention underpowered, and on a system that has nothing but a bunch of question marks around it (not debating on how much it'll sell - we know anything Nintendo ships sells - outside of the 3DS) doesn't strike me as a "lets make a ton of money off of this product!" venture.

I said nothing of the finished product or the quality of the product. I simply said that SE doesn't seem to have a clue of how to actually make money anymore, based on how they design and market their products.

Yeah, I'm not really sure why they are calling it an mmorpg really. If anything, SE should be doing everything to not label it that due to FF14 still creating negative press for them.

It's not an MMO lol. You can complete this game on your own and online access is not required to do so. Yes, there are things you can only do online but this doesn't make the game an MMO in any way.
Dragon Quest is incredibly popular in Japan and the production costs obviously aren't as high as FF in any way. You think they aren't going to profit from this? lol

Masahiro Sakurai Defends Online Dragon Quest

Smash Bros. designer says treading the same ground over and over would not be good.
At today's Dragon Quest X unveiling press conference, Square Enix revealed the long awaited next numbered entry in the long running franchise to be an online RPG (the term "MMORPG" was never used, but it may apply). So how's Joe Japan Gamer reacting?

It's difficult to judge general reaction based off the ramblings of message board posters, so we're going to wait until someone like Famitsu attempts a more scientific survey of gamers. One game creator has made his opinion very clear, though.

Masahiro Sakurai, president of Sora and chief creative force behind Smash Bros., was asked for a statement by his followers on Twitter.

He responded: "After hearing that it's online, the number of people who say the classic style Dragon Quest would be better is probably not low. However, in a game industry where evolution and sudden changes are tolerated, even considered expected, just treading the same path would be be troubling. It's being made by people who've made sound titles in the past, so I'm greatly looking forward to it."

They're waiting for an objective survey from Famitsu? About a Square Enix game?

NES Version of Dragon Quest X Also in Development -- Report
Dragon Quest X will be available for Wii and Wii U, and to a lesser extent 3DS. But these aren't the only platforms Square Enix is supporting. According to the Kyoko Shimbun (no relation to the Kyoto Shimbun), the game is also for release on the Famicom. This is the Japanese equivalent of the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System.

The image to the left show a battle party consisting of characters named Enix, Aerith, Cloud and Tifa. The image to the right shows players being prompted to connect to the internet and search for party members.

Kyoko's article did not address how Square Enix plans on making a Famicom hook up with the internet. Perhaps this has something to do with the "USB Memory" device that is included with the Wii version?

This is nothing more than a single player RPG with co-op multiplayer functionality.

Dragon Quest X FAQ Confirms Subscription Fee

Wii and Wii U sequel to charge additional fees outside of base purchase price.
The spec box on an official press release announcing Dragon Quest X yesterday seemed to indicate that the game would have a subscription fee. Square Enix has now confirmed this.

The confirmation comes via the Square Enix support Q&A page, which yesterday revealed that DQX will require an online connection to get beyond the first few hours of play. The latest question at the Q&A asks if the game will have separate charges outside of the initial purchase price. The answer: the game is planned to require separate payments in order to play online.

Square Enix has yet to provide details on how the game's online component will work (and referring to it as a "component" may even be wrong if an online connection is indeed required to play through the whole game). V Jump is promising a feature on the game, complete with a developer interview, in its next issue later this month, so it's possible that we'll get reports from other magazines before then.

There's quite a bit of info in here, from the press conference.

Job change system like XI etc.

    Spoiler: show

14:13: He's going to show a video to introduce the next DQ game.
14:14: Developed by Square Enix, the clip said...
14:15: Dragon Quest X Mezameshi Itsutsu no Shuzoku
14:16: The surname leaked out in a trademark filing a while back.
14:16: The game is going to be an online RPG. It's for Wii.
14:17: Hear that? It's for Wii! So no more questions about platform changes!
14:18: Regarding the online, your allies will be real players.
14:19: Akira Toriyama and Sugiyama Koichi are, of course, handling the character designs and music.
    14:19: They've delivered messages.
14:21: Hori is calling out the game's producer.
14:21: Producer Yosuke Saito takes the stage.
14:22: This is the first time the game is being developed inside Square Enix.
14:22: Everything is being developed internally. Even the CG work from the intro was from Visual Works (Square Enix's movie staff).
14:23: Saito explains the game's concept, world view, etc...
14:24: The game is set in Astortia, which has five continents and five races -- the five races listed in the surname.
14:25: Hori and Saito are looking at the five race artwork and praising Toriyama's work.
14:26: The game will have a huge story, Saito says. (In case you were worried about it being online and all...)
14:27: He's not sharing details on the story -- just showing artwork and telling players to imagine from there.
14:27: Next a concept: "The joy of being able to play forever."
14:27: They'll have a job change system. They won't announce the name of the system today. After release, there will be additional jobs.
14:28: The game will also have added quests post release -- like in Dragon Quest IX. It will be at the same pace or even faster pace that DQIX's. Some of the quests will span multiple volumes.
14:29: There will be various events with every season.
14:30 (Season means things like New Years, Halloween, etc... not seasons like Fall, Winter).
14:30: The next theme is things that may relieve those worried about online games. You'll be able to logout easily, for instance. You won't have to play with others -- the game can be cleared 100% on your own, using NPC characters. The commands will be familiar.
14:32: Director Jin Fujisawa takes the stage to show the game.
14:33: They're showing a play demo that was filmed earlier.
14:33: You can create your own character.
14:33: The game screen is being kept simple and clean, Fujisawa says.
14:34: Like past DQ games, you go to the pub to assemble a party.
14:34: He's adventuring with an NPC that he selected himself. The characters have job and race (the five races from the title -- dwarves, elfs, etc...).
14:35: You can see other players fighting in the world. This looks MMORPGish. I don't think they've said how many people can exist in the same world though.
14:37: Players can help other players who've fallen.
14:38: Now they're introducing a section called "life in the Dragon Quest X world." You can take things like weapon and accessory maker jobs.
14:39: You can create weapons that are used by other people. If your weapon is used by many, your status/name will rise.
14:39: You can also create your own home. Your friends can come visit.
14:40: He's going to try the Golem battle that he lost in the previous clip. This time, he's going to use a new weapon.
14:40: The music playing in the background as he plays is all new DQX music from Sugiyama.
14:41: This time, he has a new weapon and upped his skill points. He and his new party of two other NPCs face off agains the Golem. Other players who are in your area as you fight appear translucent and show their support for you.
14:42: When you're not playing, you can let your character be used by other players in their parties.
14:44: The video of the play session ends.
14:44: The hosts ask for a development status update. The producer just gives a generic bit about how they're working hard on the game, and so forth.
    14:45: Next, a surprise!
14:45: They just announced Dragon Quest X for Wii U!
14:46: The staff is working to make DQX graphically superior on Wii U. The Wii and Wii U versions will be played in the same world, though -- they will be crossplatform.
14:46: Next Hori announces a bit of possible 3DS compatibility. They're thinking about something where you can transfer your character to your 3DS for Spot Pass transfers with other players.
14:47: They're going to have a beta test. Details will be announced shortly.
14:48: Next, they bring out Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata to speak.
14:49: Iwata congradulates the series on its 25th anniversary. It's also Zelda's 25th anniversary, he reminds.
14:52: Regarding the Wii U version, Iwata notes that players who begin playing on the Wii could continue on the Wii U after they pick up that system.
14:54: Hori and Saito take the stage for a parting message.
14:55: Regarding the release time frame, Hori said it will be 2012.
