Kino's Journey 1&2 - Well now, this show is really laid back, and really damn bloody. Kinda odd combination. I'm also at a bit of a loss at the second ep's ending.
    Spoiler: show
Okay, I picked up pretty quick on the plan to assassinate the king. But then his one new law is "everyone in this country it's PUBG death match time!"? It doesn't feel right, & makes me feel like the MC had some kind of vendetta against that entire country.

  2. #62

It suffers from being boring and hugely lacking in self-awareness. When the talking bike is surprised by the talking dog I couldn't roll my eyes any harder.

I didn't think it was complicated. Just seemed like revenge for fucking with that couple he met earlier. Which is also part of what bothers me.

The art is nice but his sidekick is a literal fucking bike, I just don't get this show at all. I'll probably give it one more episode but I doubt the characters will get interesting, and in a show like this that's kind of the main point.

What's wrong with a bike sidekick!?! Could be worse the bike could be asking "Do you know what it's like to have a man's crotch in your face?"

  4. #64

Nothing wrong I just don't understand why they would do this, and I'd honestly like the bike more if it ever said something like that. At first I thought the kid was just crazy and I was like "oh that's cool" but then other people start talking to it and I couldn't laugh harder.

It's nothing offensive at all, just boring while occasionally being hilariously unaware of itself.

I guess you never saw the original Kino no tabi? It's probably the same as this, haven't seen the new one but I did see the old one. Basically it's a fairy tale. You're not supposed to take it "seriously" in any respect, it's not that kind of show. Rather, it's like the Brothers Grimm in anime format. Kino and the talking motorbike wander around to various lands and kingdoms where the people are either batshit insane or being exploited by someone who's batshit insane. Sometimes there's a clear moral lesson and sometimes it's buried behind more complex layers of storytelling. I guess Mushishi would probably be the closest series to liken it to. And just like Mushishi, while there is some delving into the main character's past to explain how they came to be traveling like this, they are basically just the vehicle for the tales that spring up around them. If you treat it like just any anime series, you'll be disappointed for sure. But if you understand that the show's entire format is "Kino goes to a new land and either solves their problem or watches the place crash and burn" you will be much happier. The point is not the characters being interesting but the atmosphere and story of the places they go to.

  6. #66

Nope, but looking into it that seems to be the general consensus. It took a while for Mushishi to grow on me but that had the benefit of actually knowing what it was while also being visually interesting and grounded enough that you could relate. And it wasn't just that the characters were boring but the stories were kinda boring and poorly paced (both episodes had something cool in it but getting there is slow and painful) as well.

Though I suppose knowing all that now I can easily decide if I want to continue watching. There are some cool spectacles but I don't know if I can be bothered to wait for them.

OOoh I didn't know there was a previous cour. Will hafta check it out now.

Mushishi is AMAZING btw. It does start off a little slow but gets really good after a few episodes.

Yeah, Mushishi is one of my all time favorite series. I still need to watch S2 (though I heard it's not as good as S1, but still passable). Kino on the other hand...while specific scenes left an imprint on me, the show overall didn't do that much for me. It's a quaint series but it's nothing mindblowing, though as with anything ymmv. Kind of interested to see what it looks like with a new coat of paint though.

I’ve heard nothing but good things about Mushishi but I couldn’t get past the first couple episodes. I think I need to just force my way through a few more to see it really get going

Same with me. Been a long ass time but think I quit around 5ish. Nothing about it was bad per se and really liked the visuals from what I remember but otherwise just was so bland and was forcing myself that far. And I can count the number of shows I've dropped voluntarily before at least finishing a season on like 1 hand cause normally try to find at least something I like

If you don't like slow-paced stories without a lot of action or atmospheric pieces, Mushishi may just not be your cup of tea.
Honestly, the first few episodes show you exactly what you're going to get with that series. It doesn't change. Mushishi is episodic, just like Kino no Tabi or Natsume's Book of Friends. There isn't really a strong narrative throughout the series, it just follows Ginko as he deals with problems the strange and fascinating mushi creatures cause. I think it's very beautiful, but you may just end up bored if you're not prone to being moved by short stories. Kino no Tabi is the same way, except it bends a little more to the humorous/fairytale side rather than the realistic/supernatural.

I don't think you need to get into it, it's one of those things where if you appreciate and get it you'll really enjoy it but you aren't missing out on a lot if you can't get into it. It's unique but that means it definitely isn't for everyone.

But if all else fails may I suggest weed? I've watched a couple episodes stoned and it was pretty awesome.

Silenka pretty much summed it up in the previous post. The story follows Kino and a talking (not so clever) motor-rad as they travel around this fairy-tale world visiting different counties and experiencing and participating in their culture for 3 days... ALWAYS THREE DAYS!!!

I've watched the first two episodes and the original 2013 airing and from what I've gathered it seems to be a retelling of the original anime 2013 or rather, it's pulling random stories from the light novels and putting some missed-matched anime together with no overall story arc.

Epi1(2017) "A Country Where People Can Kill Others" was only mentioned in the original anime in small talk between Kino and Hermes. There was never an episode dedicated to it.

Epi2(2017) "Colosseum" was actually a 2-parter in the original 2013 airing. 2017's version seemed to fast paced and skipped a lot of the cool things added in the original airing. Kino's motives were a bit more fleshed out, the mad king and son's we're as well. Even the preliminary fights between Kino and the other gladiators we're longer and showed much more how capable a fighter Kino is and how cool Kino can stay in tough situations.

Stick with it if you're down to watch Kino and Hermes travel to some strange, some peaceful, some futuristic, some dystopian, and some... simply to put it...fucked up places...

7.8 at best. Too much water.

So I found out that Inuyashiki is done by the Gantz guy and that interests me. 2nd episode was fucked up but I'm almost certain how things are gonna play out. Definitely gonna keep an eye on it.

Code Realize is reverse harem bait, not that interesting but I gave it a couple of episodes because the main character is Arsene Lupin (and I've Persona 5'd before). Cliche upon cliche for the characters and the story will probably suck.

Garo: Vanishing Line is so far 100% better than the last Garo series (the feudal(?) Japan one), set in modern Japan I assume but the animation is very good. It suffers from Hollywood shaky cam at times for some action scenes but it makes enough effort overall to get a pass for that.

Yuuki Yuna: Basically the same as the last series, if you liked that you'll like this.

Dies Irae: I dont...get it? Seems like a typical battle series but there were Nazi's (I guess) and magic? Holy shit what a mess.

Net-Juu no Susume: Better than I expected and definitely different from what I expected when I heard it was some real life/MMO show. It's basically about a girl who quits work (for yet unknown reasons) to basically become a NEET and play MMOs all day. She picks a male character in game and basically meets a cute girl who is essentially a dude (SURPRISE) and it's a comedy and I suppose eventual romantic story about those two.

Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou: I guess someone saw Made in Abyss and thought maybe we should have more lolis in dystopian environments. The art is alright and animation is nice but so far nothing happened. The most impactful thing to happen in the first episode is one girl pretending(?????) to murder her friend for half a ration bar which just left a super bitter taste in my mouth. I suspect nothing of note will happen for a long time while these characters slowly recycle their bland personality traits. Might be worth watching eventually, but for now yaaaaaawn.

Ousama Game: Survival show with extremely average art and animation. The characters are your typical stupid teens in a horror movie but the setup isn't that interesting. It's just tragedy porn kinda like Another, so I guess if you liked that you might like this. Except I don't think this has the charm and atmosphere Another had.

Konohana Kitan: Still cute, still Hanasaku Iroha.

Just Because: Still the dumbest name, but it's a good slice of life.

Black Clover: Still the loudest anime, 3rd episode was also loud as hell while also going fucking no where! If the MC's voice wasn't enough to make you stop watching then the awful pacing will do it.

Everyone who's been watching Black Clover has said it's terrible, and yet I keep hearing from various sources that it's good... these conflicting reports are confusing.

On the other hand, and as an MMO player, I love Netjuu no susume. It's honestly really funny, it's doled out a lot of laughs in just the two episodes I've seen, and it should be very relatable to anyone who has played MMOs for a long time. The animation isn't anything to write home about but the show is very charming and fun while promising to deliver just enough drama to keep it interesting.

Konohana Kitan is um...cute. I hear there's supposed to be shoujo ai in it...?

Not really that much to get from Dies irae... at least not yet anyways. Most of it is from the MCs point of view and well he flat out says this makes no sense lol. Seems we are missing things that the MC doesn't know but we as the audience should... and reading up on it it does seem like they left some stuff out from the VN already that would explain things.

Either way what's going on is fairly simple and possibly vaguely interesting. The huge thing we are missing is why the hell is any of this going on. Why did these Nazi supermen jump to the future. Why are all these random people in this town seem special in some way or another and apparently are all getting tested by the super Nazis or something. wtf is mage dudes deal. Why does it seem like a lot of characters have past lives and remember them. Why are the CR translations so terrible and inaccurate despite having VN subs to compare to?

It seems like it could be fairly interesting and they might just be keeping the mystery going... it also seems like they could just leave us hanging and just build and build and build to nothing and using this to promote the VN. I do like the music and art and style so far but god this feels like it's going to be 12 episodes of blue balls. Though to be fair an awful lot of 12-13 episode shows in recent years basically do the same damn thing and leave you at the start of a dozen new plot points. I'm just going to hate myself while I watch it hoping for more
