Does it actually fucking matter if it's being emulated properly? Or just nerds doing their usual gatekeeping and elitism?

actually i can see technical limitations with hardware of the time, latency between machine and screen, controller and machine, and the actual controller itself

emulators emulate the hardware abilities of the day, allowing the game to "run", but not the other stuff, the best emulator in the world is still not "the same"

I know at least in the speed running community they lose their fucking shit for even suggesting an emulator.

This is sort of true and false, the fact is most emulators get looked down on because they don't properly emulate the console its emulating. However emulators ARE accepted for most speed run games as long as it emulates the console.

Really its the pre PS2 era that heavily uses emulators and they do have separate categories for emu and console. For example, the entire Link's Awakening DX community uses emulator, due to the fact that console has no difference to certain approved emulators.

Where as the Super Mario community DOES look down on emulators (because they don't emulate console lag), but they still do accept runs on emu.

Each game speed run community has different rules regarding emu, that can be found on speedrun.com

Edit: To add more community quirks, the Zelda OOT community goes back and forth between emu and console with every new trick discovered, with n64 only being used for 1.0 exclusive glitch (can put a bomb down well entrance in Bongo Bongo boss room and it stuns him since he is pre-loaded and can skip boss intro cs).

Meanwhile Majora's mask community uses JP 1.0 Wii emulation due to less crashes with wierdshots (glitch where hookshot can be fired from under map) and smoother load times. People can use English version and n64, but they have their own quirks to prevent wierdshot crashes.

i mean, this is specifically about records. a point of competition and pride and sometimes real money. where what is valid and what is not follows a rigid framework of rules, which he broke.
