Star Wars: Project Luminous | Star Wars: The High Republic

Announced at the Star Wars celebration in April 2019 and having it's creative team revealed at the New York Comic Con in October 2019, now it's rumored that the project has been shifted from simply novels and comic books to including films, TV shows, and video games. Gone are trilogies, instead favoring the MCU method of releasing individual titles that accumulate into an Avengers-like crossover film.

Apparently, Lucasfilm is looking to launch a new wave of stories across comic books, novels, video games, and movies which are set 300 - 400 years before the Skywalker Saga.

The overarching plot will reportedly revolve around a group of Jedi exploring the then-unknown regions of the Galaxy and that will lead them into conflicts with a variety of enemies, including an ancient evil (described as "Sith Gods" of some sort). It sounds like this could be an origin story for the rivalry between the Jedi and Sith, and this era is being referred to as the "High Republic."

It's also said that we'll learn more about the Sith's infamous Rule of Two, while a younger version of Jedi Master Yoda will also be making an appearance of some sort.

Give us the Old Republic, cowards!

This could be their Old Republic in the new canon? Besides a deleted scene from Clone Wars and the drop in TROS, has it ever been established how far back Revan and co actually existed?

I always thought 4,000 years (KOTOR timeline?) before ANH was a bit far back...

Same here, I always thought how could they advance so little in all those years lol. I just don't have faith at all in Disney, but I love SW so I hope they hit something good at least once.

Revan and Malak in the original EU existed about 3500 years before the movies. Darth Bane was about 1000 years before them. Don't think anything has been established about that timeline in the new EU yet.

I understand the desire to want to keep something familiar, and Star Wars isn't like a lot other long running franchises in that there is only one canon (yes, now there's canon and legends, but legends is being pretty much ignored, if I'm not mistaken), but if the point of this and Episode 9 being the end of the 'Skywalker Saga' is to give Star Wars a fresh start, then they should cut it loose instead of leaving a few lingering threads.

With The Old Republic being so far from Episode 1, the stories can be completely detached from those settings, events, and characters because anything that occurred would have minuscule consequences, at best, by the time those stories came along. Even if it is four-hundred years from the stories we know, Yoda becomes the limiting factor because we know the later parts of his story and any new story has to align with his journey.

But, if none of that timeline exists/has been established in the new canon, then I guess the point is somewhat moot..

The High Republic Era - 200 Years Before The Phantom Menace

    Spoiler: show

Later this year, Lucasfilm will launch an epic new era of Star Wars storytelling that will be explored through multiple voices in adult and young adult novels, children’s books, and comics from a variety of publishers including Disney Lucasfilm Press, Del Rey, IDW Publishing, and Marvel.

Star Wars: The High Republic, which has previously been referred to as “Project Luminous”, will be set in an era when the Galactic Republic and the Jedi Order are at their zenith, about 200 years before the events of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. This period on the Star Wars timeline will not overlap any of the filmed features or series currently planned for production, giving creators and partners a vast amount of room to tell Star Wars stories with new adventures and original characters.

“We are so excited to be opening up such a rich, fertile era for our authors to explore,” says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “We’ll get to see the Jedi in their prime.”

“Star Wars: The High Republic features the Jedi as we’ve always wanted to see them — as true guardians of peace and justice. This is a hopeful, optimistic time, when the Jedi and the Galactic Republic are at their height. But of course, into this glorious new era something wicked this way comes,” says Lucasfilm publishing creative director Michael Siglain. “This initiative will give readers young and old a new corner of the galaxy to explore through rich, meaningful stories. Plus, readers will learn what scares the Jedi.”

“This was a golden age for the Jedi, and also a time of galactic expansion in the Outer Rim. So expect there to be rich tales of exploration; charting out the galaxy, meeting new cultures, and discovering what pioneer life in the Outer Rim was like. This is an incredible sandbox for our storytellers to play in, both within publishing and beyond, and we can’t wait to see the great fiction they build within it,” says Lucasfilm vice president, franchise content and strategy James Waugh.

As previously announced, Star Wars: The High Republic has enlisted top-tier, fan-favorite authors Claudia Gray, Justina Ireland, Daniel José Older, Cavan Scott, and Charles Soule to craft this new era of Star Wars publishing.

The first books and comics are set to debut at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim in August 2020 with Star Wars: The High Republic: Light of the Jedi, a massive interconnected story that’s told across various formats by various publishers.

If it stays books and comic books, fine. Do not want a feature film in this time period.

I like some of the concept art (Wookie Jedi!) and the ideas they have but I wish it was set a little bit further back in time.

Also, at 1:24 pause it and look at their board. A couple things that stuck out to me was:

    "Sith Empire"
    "Splinter group force-users"

New dump of concept art for ships and a space station. Most of it is repurposed from unused film designs.
