    Legend of Zelda

“The Legend of Zelda,” one of the most popular videogame series of all time, is in the works as a television show at Netflix.

The video streaming service is in the early stages of developing a live action series based on “Zelda,” about an ordinary boy named Link who must rescue a princess named Zelda and save a fantasy world called Hyrule, said a person familiar with the matter. As it seeks writers to work on the show, Netflix is describing it as “Game of Thrones” for a family audience, this person said.

The “Zelda” games have traditionally included swords and sorcery, like “Game of Thrones” or “Lord of the Rings,” but typically with a more light-hearted, kid-friendly tone.

Netflix is said to be working closely with Nintendo, the Japanese game developer that has made about 20 “The Legend of Zelda” games since the original, which was released in the U.S. in 1987.

Nintendo is very protective of its intellectual property and has allowed few adaptations over the years. An animated “Legend of Zelda” series ran for just one season in 1989. A 1993 movie based on Nintendo’s “Super Mario Bros.” was an infamous bomb.

As it is still seeking a writer to work on the series, Netflix has a long road to travel before a “Legend of Zelda” series actually becomes a reality. It’s also possible that Netflix or Nintendo will kill the project before it gets off the ground.

A Netflix spokeswoman declined to comment. A Nintendo spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Well to be fair, the bar is already set so low, even Hermes Conrad couldn't limbo below that thing. If done right, it can be real good. If done wrong, it can make the Phillips CDI Zelda games look good.

Gonna be weird seeing Link have a conversation with someone.

As long as there is a scene where Link walks into a random person's house and breaks a jar for a hidden Rupee this show will be a success.

Bonus points if it's still in grunts and yells.

Anyway, I'm for this if done right. Been kind of reliving my childhood a bit in rewatching Hercules as I did Xena last year. I feel like there's a general lack of medieval fantasy media floating around at the moment, with GoT being understandably inaccessible for younger audiences. I liked Legend of the Seeker enough, even though it had its share of groan moments. Same with Merlin, really. I just hope they don't go too kiddy or emphasize characters like Tingle.

I can't see this stuff without thinking of "Legend of Neil".

I kinda have faith in Netflix shows now. Hopefully this isn't the show that destroys that faith, because I love LoZ

I've been trying to wrap my head around how they could structure a show like this (since a show following Link around as he clears dungeons would be awful..), and I think if they did something akin to the recent Thundercats show where it follows the hero, accompanied by allies, on a quest, then it could work.

I'd somewhat anticipate a sort of villain of the week formula (Or episode, since Netflix season dumps, yay~), with Link starting out small taking local bullies, and then being drawn into the grand quest of rescuing the princess and taking on Ganon. He wouldn't start off with the Master Sword, of course, but after trips to meet Zoras, Gerudo, Goron, and so on, maybe Impa could come to him and point him in the right direction, all eventually leading up to the final showdown. There are enough lore bits and established themes to put together such a mish-mash, and if done right, I could see 24 one hour episodes out of it. Maybe another 12 if they do a decent post-Ganon aftermath.
