FFRK - The Torch Burns On (II) Event & Strategies

Spoiler alert: as Reddit aptly points out - with the addition of Scott you can have a full FFII party of dead guys! This is a game that probably had the most deaths until X, so that makes sense. Thanks DeNa!

    Spoiler: show

"If you excuse me, I... just need to rest...for a little while..." - Scott
"My name is Gordon. I was once a prince of Kashaun." - Gordon

The alliance between his kingdom and Fynn, along with his feelings for Princess Hilda, lead him to defend Fynn Castle during the Empire's Siege.

Unfortunately, he dies shortly after the attack, though not before telling Firion about Borghen's treason. He gives the party the Map Ring just prior to his death.

He asks Firion to also tell Hilda his feelings for her, though he reconsiders, not wanting her to grieve, leading to Hilda never learning the truth about his feelings towards her.

    Event Start Date: October 19
    Event Bonus Battle: September 22
    Event End Date: OCtober 29

This should return us to the regular Thurs/Sun/Thurs event schedule.

All information is taken from a mixture of Reddit/Spreadsheets/Kongpakbao Site and my own obviously expert analysis.

Most info for the event comes from this site: https://www.reddit.com/r/FFRecordKee...27&sh=e2725122

Though the information provided is used as a guideline and not always taken directly from the thread. When necessary, additional thoughts on Cid Missions and battle strategies are added.

    Notable Rewards:
Egil's Torch (Translation? Father's Torch?) - 5* Accessory. Moderate fire resist and Atk+15.

Freeze Sword - Spellblade. Deal 2 physical ice attacks to one target.

Basically, they took the blowey out of freezyblowey. Global will likely change the name to Flurry Twinstrike.

Crimson Cross - Darkness. Deal 4 physical dark attacks in exchange for 20%* of your max HP.

    * Some sources say 25. Some say 20. It does damage to you.

    New Characters Acquired:
    Scott - Black Magic 3, White Magic 4, Spellblade 5, Combat 4, Knight 4

    Dress Spheres Acquired:
    Wild Rose

    Old Characters Acquired:
    Gordon
    Minwu

    New Memory Crystals:
    Scott MC1/MC2

    Old Memory Crystals
    Gordon MC1/MC2
    Minwu MC1/MC2

    New Record Materia:
Scott RM1: Deal slightly more damage with Spellblade abilities.
Scott RM2: Moderate chance to turn Attack into Fire Strike.
Scott RM3: Grants reraise at the start of battle. When revided, moderate defense boost.

    New Legend Materia
    Leon's LM1 - Small Dark damage up.
Leon's LM2 - Up to large Atk up based on number of dark damage abilities used.
Minwu's LM1 - Small White Magic healing up.
Minwu's LM2 - High chance to remove inflicted Poison/Silence/Blind/Confuse statuses when casting cure spells.
    Gordon's LM1 - Small Support damage up.
Gordon's LM2 - Medium chance to minor Imperil fire enemies when using Support abilities.
Emperor's LM1 - Small Black Magic damage up.
Emperor's LM2- Medium chance to counter Black Magic attacks with minor Imperil Earth.

    New Record Sphere
    Scott - Spellblade Damage +9%

    Characters Needed for Battles
Complete 'Arrogant Saint' with a party of Scott, Minwu, Josef, and Ricard only.

    Cid Missions
Complete Ultimate++ fight with a party of FF2 heroes.

    Relics
    Ricard gets a BSB!

I kind of view banner 2 as stronger than banner 1, honestly. Though since everyone seems to have spent whatever mythril they had left on the FF7 rebirth draw you may not have any to pull here anyways.

This banner is a little out of order since XV shifted, so it does revert back to the 2 LM format.

    Banner 1:

Gordon leads off banner 1 with a decent enough USB, but it could have used some instantcast in there. Atk/Mag/Mnd breakdown on entry with party haste and high regen is a strong mitigation suite, but still a little under Hyper Mighty G. His burst and phys blink/atk/mag buff SSB return as well.

Minwu joins in on the healing USB's with a potent instantcast Curaga, HP Stock, and Stoneskin - which can effectively buy you a free 5K HP in addition to what you were healed for. Unfortunately, his BSB isn't on either banner.

Scott gets in on the medica action with a SSB 40% medica that adds some fire/non entry damage. His BSB is a little bit off from the standard Spellblade BSB formula though - for better and worse. Entry is 8 hits of fire/non with en-fire. Cmd1 is a 3 hit fire/non spellblade attack with Spellblade damage boosted by 15% for the next 3 uses, and his Cmd2 is an Atk/Def bargain with AoE damage.

Guy throws down with his imperil earth SSB and Josef adds his hauntingly poetic snowball medica.

    Banner 2:

Just can't decide what to do with Emperor Mateus, can we DeNA?

His Ultra is an imperil earth Atk/Mag/Res breakdown with an AoE wind/earth entry. Yay for a rare element imperil, but his BSB (which also appears here) is a bit more functional for a wind mage due to self healing and en-element. His Radiant Shield SSB comes back as well.

Leon - one of the early BSB's is kinda late to the USB party. But the wait is worth it for Dark Knight fans. 8 hits dark/non damage comes with en-dark, a Darkness school boost of 30%, and 6k HP stock. Sadly, his BSB does not return and this is his only non LM offering this banner.

Everyone favorite spy Josef adds his BSB to the list. Ice monks are rare (Snow being the only other one) and Josef's BSB is a bit of a mixed bag. Party Atk/Mag boost with en-ice on entry is good but a little dated. His commands are good, especially if you take advantage of his triggers. Cmd2 offers 4 hits of ice/non damage and Unbound Fury status while Cmd1 deals 3 hits (6 hits if Unbound Fury is active). Unbound Fury is the same buff that Master and Yang have, granting shortcharge but also Def/Res -40%. His party hastega SSB comes back here as well.

Finally, Firion's instant magic blink BSB and Minwu's instant medica show up here.

    Spoiler: show
You thought I forgot the Highwind family namesake, didn't you?

    Pshaw...

Ricard has Aranea's BSB from the XV banner with an element switch. Instead of dark/lightning and en-lightning with Thunder Dive spam, Ricard offers wind/non with en-wind and Sky High spam. The commands are the same too, with Cmd2 boosting Dragoon abilitiy damage by 9% leading into Cmd1 with 2 charges of instant jumps.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it, lolDrg'ers.

    Legend Materias:
Banner 1 - Gordon: Status debuff duration +30%.
Banner 1 - Minwu: 25% chance to add physical blink when using a healing ability.

Banner 2 - Emperor: Trance Status: Short Charge all abilities.
Banner 2 - Leon: 30% chance to doublecast Darkness abilities..

Everything should be unlocked from the get-go, as this begins the beta for new event format "Beta" test.

    Bonus Battles
    Tempting Mimic
    Lamia Queen
    HP: 110,000
    Target Score:
    • Defeat Lamia Queen without being KO'ed.
    • Reduce Lamia Queen's attack.

    Weak: None

    Behemoth

    • Reduce the behemoth's attack.

    Weak: None
    Absorb: None
    Resist: None
    Null: None
    Status Vulnerabilities: Poison

Notes: Lamia queen is 100% physical, but will cast Blink so use Lifesiphon/spells. She can also inflict Sleep and Confuse.

Behemoth is nothing special. Also entirely physical, and retaliate counters all but his AoE attack.

    Arrogant Saint +++
    Emperor of Heaven
    HP: 225,101
    Target Score:
    • Reduce the Emperor's magic.
    • Reduce the Emperor's defense.
    • Reduce the Emperor's resistance.

    Weak: None
    Absorbs: None
    Resists: Omni Resist 50%
    Null: None
    Vulnerabilities: Slow

    Moveset:
(Default only) Attack (PHY: ST physical, recover HP proportional to damage dealt)

Attack (PHY: ST moderate physical, recover HP proportional to damage dealt)
Flare 16 (BLK: ST heavy magical non-element)
Inferno 16 (BLK: AOE magical fire)
    Dispel 16 (WHT: AOE Dispel)
Slow 16 (WHT: AOE Slow, medium chance)
Innocence 16 (NAT: AOE magical non-element)

Notes: His drain strike is physical, but the rest of his damage output is magical.

Take advantage of the Slow vulnerability, as he can AoE dispel and slow. Otherwise, the fight is straightforward.

Cid Mission: Slow on Minwu is a given, as is slotting Magic BD on Josef. Lean on non-elemental options here due to the resist issue. His damage output when slowed isn't horrible, so certainly take advantage of that. May require egging Scott to 80.

    Ultimate + Apocalypse Battles
    Frenzied Commander
    凶Gottos

    Weak: None
    Absorbs: None

    Null: None
    Vulnerabilities: None

Notes: 凶Gottos can use 2 actions every turn, and will start the fight by casting haste. He can also use Imbibe to raise his attack by 50%, so have a Power Break/down ready.

Gottos can also counter physical attacks with an AoE physical hit, which if done with his atk boost active, can cause some hurt.

In Very Weak phase his physical Ultimate Attack can stun at a 33% clip, so stun resist on a healer may be worth while unless youre Cloud USB'ing him down.

    Old Poisonous Dragon ++ (U)
    凶Green Dragon
    HP: 390,000
    Target Score:
    • Exploit Green Dragon's weakness to fire attacks.

Counter Poison Fog (75% response to black or white magic; NAT: AOE 246% magical bio, 33% chance to Poison)

(Weak/V Weak only) 凶 Poison Fog (NAT: AOE 342% magical bio, 123% chance to Poison)
(Weak/V Weak only) 凶 Attack (NAT: 266% ST physical, 2 hits, 33% chance to Stun each hit)

Notes and Strategies: Mixed mitigation is needed, and also make note of Green Dragon's ability to sun at lower HP.

Physical attacks (or Summon abilities) are your better bet here, since global has minimal poison element resist and Green Dragon counters magical hits with the Poison Fog at a 75% clip.

Cid Mission: Kind of a mixed bag here. FF2 has a lot of elemental ability users, but the damaging ones are mages. Josef can make use of fire based Monk abilities for damage + healing, Scott can spellblade, etc. The dark and wind resist hurts Leon and Emperor, but Leon can bring Combat abilities to fix that.

If you're low on synergy, it may be wise to gear 2 healers because the AoE damage can get crazy without dance mitigation.

(Weak only) Blizzard 10 (BLK: AOE 294% magical ice)
(Weak only) Blizzard 10 (BLK: ST 490% magical ice)

Notes: An odd mechanic for this fight is that all 3 targets have a 30% chance to be "immune" from any physical hit - including Lifesiphon *AND* Soul Breaks.

The Ogre Mages are pretty scripted, which is why they should be your primary target. Luckily, there aren't any water attacks so the realm synergy Gigas Armlets are invaluable here as their 凶 Blizzard is a piercing attack - but balance that against wanting sleep resist. Affliction Break could help if you're able fit it in.

The Ogre's open with 3 straight attacks, followed by Sleep for 2 turns. But be careful in using too strong an AoE, as you could get them into Weak phase and then eat strong AoE ice spells constantly while slept. Getting one down ASAP is your main goal, but if you're got the ability to AoE them down quick then do it.

Red Soul really just follows a scrict AI cycle of Attack/Fire/Ice/Thunder/repeat and then throwing in AoE versions when its weaker. Fire Breath is a piercing magical AoE hit, so keep that in mind when keeping up with mitigation uses.

The Ogres and sleep are the real dangers here.

Jump Start Notes: Despite the increased stats, the AI behaves the same as the regular fight. Change nothing aside from the usual Dr. Mog/MM/etc setups.

I really like having all the dungeons open from the get-go. It's nice to be able to get the new character, their crystals, then go back and use the other dungeons to level them.

Do they keep this format going forward? ...it says Beta.

you always have to start with the first dungeon though, which unlocks the second, etc.

with this format I started with the 3rd dungeon, then the 4th dungeon for the crystal, then the 7th for crystal II, then went back and did the 1st 2nd.

CM120: Meteor crush+omega drived him to death
CMU++: I didn't know about the counter poison because dr mog didn't mention it and I didn't read above, and the first few runs were ugly.
    DApoc: Very easy.
Ultimate: I give this one extra credit because I went in with the leveling team with virtually no soul breaks and it was honestly harder than the apoc with ateam.

Soloed MP Apoc + with this

    Was pretty easy
    SB used

    Shtola Pulse Only
    Tyro SG only
Raines 2 BSB and 1 OSB
Faris 2 Phantom and 1 Pirate Princess
    OK some BSB

RW was Eiko USB (Mostly for the instant haste after slowga)

    Was never in danger

Jumpstart can eat a bag of dicks. Everyone has sleep resist accessories of moderate or higher on and like clockwork, 3 people get slept on the second or third cast.

    for jumpstart, my setup was:

    terra: r3 meltdown, usb/osb
faris: multi+magic dances, idr which SBs i used but they're all a bit dodgy just because of the random pblink
    maria: bsb
ramza: r2 affliction break, wrath, USB
    yshtola: ultracure, curada, BSB

there's some luck involved with landing AB again due to the pblink. if you can stick that + have sleep resist accessories, it's exceedingly unlikely you'll have to deal with more than 1-2 characters getting slept. ultracure can handle that, enkidu magicite can be your backup if your healer gets slept or by some crazy chance 3-4 people get slept at once thru affliction break + resist accessories.

My Jump Start team. Though it does suck that these three can evade physical soul breaks. Took me a few times to not have everyone asleep.

Cait Sith - MBD Dance | Multi Break - BSB - +MND materia
    Maria - Meltdown | Chain Stonega - BSB - +MAG materia
    Krile - R3 Chain Firaga | R3 Titan - Sheepsong + Quick Cast SSB
Guy - Pound | Meteor Crush - Gaia Drum imperil Earth
    Ysh - Curada | Ultra Cure - BSB|Wall
RW: Rikku USB | Magicite: Enkidu

If you have Red's USB, that can help too. I ended up using that since I had similar issues with getting overly slept even with Affliction Break+Sleep resist.

I don't know if I would have been able to do the JS without Maria BSB considering their collective weaknesses, resists, and absorbs. Definately the right choice. History's Truth RW.

Focused one of the Ogre's down ASAP, with Rydia targeting Meltdown and OK 20k Ninja magic.

If timed right, OK could use engulfing flame 4 times and then have the chance to get in an affliction break as a safety net on the remaining mage. This lets you use Enkidu only once for the status removal, leaving you a safety 2nd summon if the torch gets dicey.

OK was hitting 9999x2, Rydia and Maria were hitting 5k per hit on commands and Rydia's Meltdown uses were cracking 7k.

    JS was easy for me

Rydia did BSB then OSB x2 on the Flame then C1 till the end
Terra did BSB then USB then fire on the ogres till death
    Faris Debuffed
    Shtola did wall
    Krile use Sheepsong then BSB
    Rikku RW

Got slepted on 4th turn but enkidu fixed it

Yeah, if I had Terra stuff that may be a different story. I could have used physical characters at the risk of that 30% miss chance, and my other strong teams (thunder, holy, ice) run into resistances and absorbs.
