right click on your Playonline folder, go to security tab and check your permissions...
That's a weird message for sure. The message implies that your permissions are too restrictive. Have you done any changes lately?
Like above, check your privilege in that folder to see if you can read/write.
It's possible an antivirus prevent FF to write on the hd or something, so you might want to double check that.
Right-click POL Folder. (C:\Program Files\PlayOnline)
Properties.
Securit Tab
Advanced
Tick, "Replace permission entries on all child objects ......."
Ok
Ok
Lemme know if that works.
So my POL folder is marked as read only for some reason, and every time I uncheck it and say "yes sub folders blah blah" it goes through like it's doing stuff and then when I check again, it's read only again. The only thing that has been changed on this computer in the past 24 hours was a windows update, guess that's somehow to blame, thanks MS.
Its always shown as read only, even though its not. I forgot what it was, but if the box is semi-checked, between unchecked and checked, its normal.
So when I go to properties, there are several different types of users, as shown here:

I've been trying what everyone has been suggesting, but still no luck.
What is those "Y" thing, isnt it suposed to be \?
Yes, for some reason when I installed JP language pack all my "\"s started showing up that way.
He probably has non-unicode programs set to default as JP [needed to get IME working iirc]
Bumping because I'd rather not reinstall POL/FFXI.
Are you logged in as administrator? Also try the thing I said on your programs folder higher up the dir tree, rather than your POL folder.
Ended up just reinstalling pol, seems to have fixed the problem. ¯\(°_o)/¯
