    Dengeki Translation: Yoshida Pre-Heavensward Interview

It's less than an hour to early access so I flew through some of this just to get it posted. Hype!

There may be some inaccuracy with the translation or info I missed or skipped over in an effort to get it posted quickly. I also definitely didn't proofread, so expect typos and/or wonky grammar.

    -----

One June 19 at 18:00 JST, early access will finally begin for Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward. We sat down with producer and director Naoki Yoshida to discuss Final Fantasy XIV's first expansion pack.

Since service for Heavensward is just about to begin, we discussed a lot of long-awaited information that people should be excited to hear. The interview was published six hours after FFXIV entered its 24 hour maintenance, so please enjoy this in conjunction with the patch notes that were published on June 17.

Creating the expansion pack was more difficult than expected

The production of Heavensward must have been a lot of work as it went on in parallel with the patch 2.0 series.

Yoshida: At the Las Vegas Fan Festival when we announced Heavensward, we talked about the release date being Spring 2015 (laughs). Simply put, we misjudged the amount of time it would take to finish production of the expansion and patches at the same time. For the first expansion pack, we're offering a tremendous amount of content in a single package.

Patch 2.55 with the grand finale of the Reborn series was a lot of work and took a lot of resources to complete. If we went straight into working on 3.0, I think there would have been enough time, but there were a lot of tasks that pulled the staff in different directions during the patch 2.5 series so it took time before they were able to completely get to work on Heavensward. Of course, June is not really spring. At the Fan Festival last October, we mentioned that "May is still Spring," but this is more like summer (smirks).

However, if we announced the timing as summer, everyone would probably have found that to sound pretty late. If you comparing to other MMORPGs that operate around the world, you'll find that they usually maintain major updates and are able to create expansions in a correspondingly short period of time. We also had to consider our previous announcement that it was coming "sooner than you might think."

As a user who hasn't experienced expansion packs in many other online games, it still seems fairly common to be waiting for new content.

Yoshida: Since FFXIV is a worldwide game, comparing it to other online games is important. But each player is coming from a different perspective, and we want to make sure we "do it right." In any case, we're past that so now (the interview took place in early June) we have to shift our focus towards mitigating early access congestion.

For the patch notes this time, are you going to intentionally hide more information than usual?

Yoshida: For writing the patch notes, one of the instructions was to make sure that not too much detail is included. So referencing story content, for example, it should look something like "many main quests have been added." To avoid spoilers, things like the quest titles and locations to activate them will all be filled with "????."

We've decided to just show the name of the first quest which begins the main scenario, and you'll get to enjoy the rest in the game after that. Also, we'll show the new actions and levels learned for all jobs, but it will just be a list that doesn't include any of the effects.

So it should be exciting to exchange information with other players for the first time in a while.

Yoshida: I thought it would be better to give rise to information like this not only in the game but around the internet as well. We'll also be slowing down the updates on the official site database a bit.

The design of Heavensward was created to emphasize shadows, can you talk a bit about why you went in that direction?

Yoshida: Since I knew that A Realm Reborn would be the first MMORPG for many players, one of our overall goals was to make things self-explanatory for everyone. The beginning in particular is very easy to understand - we intentionally slowed the pacing of progression. Since it might be quite daunting for players in Japan to jump into a MMORPG, we created it first and foremost as a Final Fantasy game for the time being so that players would find it easy to get started.

As part of this, we created a deliberately brighter image, which didn't emulate reality like many overseas games would. Since we were steering things in an easier-to-play direction, we didn't want to place a lot of emphasis on creating a totally realistic work.

However, we've gotten a lot of feedback from media and players around the world that recent FF titles and anime/manga are being designed with adults in mind. The world has both sweet and sour elements, and it's hard to get emotionally invested in a world where only beauty is portrayed. I think there are other 40+ year olds like myself who feel the same, so this time we've placed more emphasis on the darkness of the picture.

That said, the cutscenes for the story will still have a level of comfmort along the lines of A Realm Reborn and other Final Fantasy titles where we won't be depicting bloody massacres. So in that regard we were able to create a good mix. I think might be good to move things in a slightly darker direction, but we'll watch player feedback to decide how to move forward in the patch 3.X series.

In A Realm Reborn, there was a clear end to the story when you defeated Gaius and Ultima Weapon at the start of service. Will there be a similar ending to Heavensward with the content implemented in patch 3.0?

Yoshida: Yes. The story itself is longer than what was included in A Realm Reborn, and we also have quite a lot of voiceover. Of course, there's also a huge amount of cutscenes. There will be a neat ending complete with credits, so please look forward to it.

Instead of just focusing on Ishgard, will there also be some focus on the upheaval in Ul'dah?

Yoshida: There are a number of main threads to the story this time around. The first one, of course, is the Dragonsong War. The Warrior of Light has jumped into the middle of a war that's been waged for the past 1000 years between humans and dragons. By the end, some of the mysteries around why humans and dragons are fighting, the different takes on the war from the human and dragon side, and the founding legend of Ishgard should all become clearer.

Past that, there's also story around the three city-states which will focus on the political turmoil in Ul'dah, a story with the new emperor of the Garlean empire finally taking action, and the story of the Ascians. There's also the underlying primal story. The stories of the Ascians and Primals are an overarching story which will not end here, but the stories behind the political turmoil in Ul'dah and the Dragonsong War will be fully settled. A lot of elements foreshadowed prior to 3.0 will be realized.

Although the preview trailer just shows Alphinaud and Tataru alongside the player, in patch 2.5 Midgardsormr also emerged as a new guiding presence for the player. Will he also continue to be at the player's side?

Yoshida: Midgardsormr was born of the planet Hydaelyn. You've seen that he is the first of the dragons. He is watching for Hydaelyn without taking sides, keeping an eye on the Warrior of Light. He will return at important points in the storyline, but this will not focus on his own narrative. He will return at certain points following actions taken by the Warrior of Light. You may forget about him during your adventures between his appearances (laughs).

Also, in addition to Tataru and Alphinaud from the city-state side of Eorzea, there will also be many other key players in the story like Aymeric, Lucia, Estinien, Haurchefant, Ysayle, and Pope Thordan VII.

The destruction from the war is evident as players set foot in Ishgard for the first time. Although the imperial capital is quite dismal, will it be repaired over time like Revenant's Toll?

Yoshida: The city area of Ishgard itself will not be repaired. The reason behind that is that different players will arrive with different timing. We were able to do this with Revenant's Toll because it doesn't play a major part in the main scenario. It was a small group of pioneers that developed a small town separately from the main scenario, so even if players returned to Revenant's Toll at different points in the storyline with different degrees of development of the town, it doesn't have any impact.

On the flip side, if we repaired Ishgard and those who start A Realm Reborn a year from now arrive at Ishgard, they might think "this beautiful city is at war?" If we wanted to do something like gradually repair Ishgard, it would have to be separate instances for each character. Of course, that would create a lot of server load, and since we plan for Ishgard to become the fourth major city, we have no plans for that.

On that note, will there be another place like Revenant's Toll in A Realm Reborn which becomes a second hub of activity?

Yoshida: We haven't made the information public yet, but there will be places like Revenant's Toll which you'll visit as you become a higher level. There's also a lot of story at those new bases. There might also be something like what happened with Rowena (laughs).

In A Realm Reborn, we had the Warrior of Light as a central figure with a lot of supporting cast around for players to take an interest in. I think people who are into the world setting and lore will find some particularly interesting things.

We got the impression that the field areas would have many different looks based on the time and weather.

Yoshida: Since you can also fly around these areas, you'll be able to see the huge differences from weather and time. For example, when the weather is foggy, you won't be abl eto see very far at all on the flying mount. We've intentionally adjusted this so you'll feel like you have to come down to a lower altitude to see where you are going when the weather is bad.

At the same time that we made adjustments to the shading, we also made adjustments to the sense of distance and depth of fog. When it's rainy or foggy out, you'll naturally have to come down to see where you're going and you probably won't even realize it.

Although the visibility comes down with fog and you'll have to come down to lower altitude, this will also give you a better look at objects like trees and buildings. So bad weather will actually give players a reason to get a closer look at things, and adventurers who are running around on the ground will look up at the sky and see players flying closely, so it should really change the atmosphere of the world.

There were probably no issues on the PC and PS4, but was reproducing the content on PS3 quite difficult?

Yoshida: It was tough. The memory is part of it, but also the speed of the HDD hard drive creates issues in loading data. Retrofitting a SSD helps to some extent, but there are still physical limits based on the memory and other parts of the hardware configuration that you can't change.

When you're flying around on a flying mount at high speed, the server will send data and data will be loaded into memory as players pass certain points where it will perform the next read. By staggering the way information is read, we were able to efficiently get around this problem.

For example, if you're moving too quickly when NPCs start to load, you'll get there before the NPCs. As a result, if the NPC has a quest, you could find yourself in a situation where you can't figure out where to go for the quest since the NPC hasn't loaded. So we devised a solution where quest information and tags would have a priority display to load ahead and would be rendered with top priority.

Other information will be expanded once adventurers stop moving. This was something we decided back at the design stage so we were able to realize it.

Graphical resources might be the biggest issue. For example, if collision detection data was unreadable players would be able to go through floors, etc., so we condensed the collision data to be as small as possible and had strict specifications when we developed the fields. This isn't only for PS3s, but also for low spec PCs which struggle to run the game. The development team spent a lot time thinking about these.

Thoughts included in the theme song

Did you have any information or guidance to Nobuo Uematsu who worked on the theme song "Dragonsong"?

Yoshida: The first thing we spoke about was that we wanted a woman vocal, and that the song would be appropriate for the end credits after a thousand year war between humans and dragons was settled. Once he was able to understand the nature of the Dragonsong War, I think he was able to represent the feelings of those emotions. Additionally, I told him that I wanted it in the form of Hydaelyn singing it as the will of the stars.

Word has spread around the internet that it's like a tragic love song.

Yoshida: Yeah. At the same time I was speaking with Uematsu, I also conveyed this information to Koji and Maehiro (Michael-Christopher Koji Fox, Kazutoyo Maehiro). So the idea of the lyrics came out of the scenario.

After you go through all of the scenario, you'll find additional meaning in the lyrics. Also, the trailer was made in mind as a promotional video for the song "Dragonsong." Rather than it being a preview video for FFXIV, it should be more thought of to images set to Uematsu's "Dragonsong."

On the topic of music, in A Realm Reborn there was one main battle song with different arrangements for each area. Will it be similar to this in Heavensward?

Yoshida: There are new battle songs that don't only play in the areas around Ishgard. Also, we have different arrangements depending on the region. Since Ishgard is a religious city, we wanted the music to have a religious feeling to it, for example using a pipe organ. I think there are a lot of strong songs.

For "A Realm Reborn," the song "Torn from the Heavens" was one that kind of represented the overall direction of the game. Is there a song like that this time?

Yoshida: I think the song used in the opening movie for Heavensward is like that. It's sort of like the main theme of Heavensward until the ending, so you'll hear arrangements of that song.

So if you hear that song, you should expect that the scene is important.

Something players have paid a lot of attention to is jobs. How was the feedback after you announced the job adjustments for the level cap increase?

Yoshida: For the new jobs, we got feedback that the dark knight seemed to be missing something compared to the other two; however, since they are totally new jobs, most of the feedback was positive, so we're not too worried about it. If anything, we were happier to see the positive feedback about existing jobs. We got an especially large amount of feedback on ninja regarding the positional changes, but really it should just be considered a bonus by meeting the condition.

How do you think reactions will be once players reach the level cap?

Yoshida: It will be a while before people have multiple jobs at the level cap, so it will be hard to compare at first. In the meantime, I think people will focus on research like coming up with new action rotations.

As you get to the new level cap you'll be able to learn and try out the new actions to some extent, but you may not really have a chance to try it out until end game content.

Yoshida: I think the hard primals will be the first place. Hard primals will be the highest content open at the start, so they will be testing grounds before Alexander is released.

Previously the hard primals were incorporated into the main story line, will it be like this again?

Yoshida: No, they'll be after the main scenario once you reach level 60. You should think about it more like when A Realm Reborn first came out. All of the new end game content will be level 60. The new Allagan Tomestones of Law also won't be ontainable until you reach level 60.

I've seen people write that you could earn them in Duty Roulette while leveling, but it won't be like that. It's just like right now where if you're at level 45, you can't get any Allagan Tomestones because you're not at the level cap.

By the way, will there be any upgrade to the equipment obtained with Poetics to further increase level?

Yoshida: No, that won't increase. Allagan Tomestones of Poetics will remain as the Allagan Tomestone for level 50. It will be left in there for the time being for players who start from A Realm Reborn to use once they reach level 50.

How is the growth rate from level 50 to 60?

Yoshida: Well, we'll be adjusting the growth rate on the A Realm Reborn side when Heavensward is released so it will change, but it will be about the same as it took to get from level 1 to level 50 when A Realm Reborn was released. Maybe a little longer for the first job.

Will there be an experience bonus for jobs from the second onward like before?

Yoshida: There will be the normal 1.5x bonus from level 50 to 60. We're boosting the increase from level 1 to 50 from 1.5x to 2x. This should help newer players catch up as soon as possible and let them get to level 50 pretty quickly.

For leveling up, Instanced Dungeons, FATEs, and guildleves were the main ways to obtain experience. Will it still be like that?

Yoshida: You might have forgotten since A Realm Reborn came out, but you also obtain experience by charting the maps for new areas. So exploration will also be a valuable way to get experience.

Oh yeah, I completely forgot about that! (laughs)

Yoshida: It's been a while since many people have been leveling up. Everyone, please think about how it was back at 2.0 (laughs).

Will the hunting log be expanded?

Yoshida: The hunting log will not be expanded, including for the new jobs in general since they have no associated class. To increase from level 30, you should take advantage of dungeons, FATEs, and guildleves.

You previously announced primal weapons would be added for the new jobs. Will there also be other new job equipment from old content like artifact armor from job quests?

Yoshida: No, since their level cap was never level 50, there will only be those for level 60. The job quests will be in the same increments as existing jobs, every 5 levels until 50 and every 2 levels after that. However, we've added weapons for the new jobs to all the raids - Binding Coil, Second Coil, and Final Coil of Bahamut.

I think people will want to try out the new jobs in various dungeons, so how are you dividing up the duty roulettes?

Yoshida: The dungeons from level 1 to 47 of A Realm Reborn which are now "low level" will be expanded to include all of the dungeons for leveling up in Heavensward. For old and new players alike, this will be the roulette to use for leveling up. The "hard" roulette will include all of the level 50 dungeons, and the "expert" roulette will include the dungeons to be tackled after you become level 60.

[[question that confused me here and it's almost early access time so I'm just flying through this to get it posted]]

The small party mechanic is not only for roulette, but also something you'll be using in the future?

Yoshida: It can be used for FC events, competitions, or evne for soloing. We also assume people will use it to help out friends. It can be applied for most of the content in "A Realm Reborn," and we'll gradually allow it for dungeons in patch 3.0 and moving forward in the patch 3.X series. However, fighting some bosses solo might be impossible with some of the mechanics (laughs). It might not be possible to clear them all solo.

So the mechanics themselves present a problem (laughs). By the way, since you can go with a smaller group, can you also use your chocobo companion?

    Yoshida: No, you can't.

With more actions at level 50, people will be changing around their hotbars. Will there be any adjustments for the high level actions to make them useable at lower levels, such as lowering their power?

Yoshida: Just lowering their power wouldn't balance it, so we have no plans to do that at the moment. Even if you lower the power for weaponskills, you still have problems with actions that, for example, make you invincible and would be overpowered for low level dungeons.

It would be quite unreasonable to have all that power with weak enemies around. Also with higher level tanks and DPS performing a lot of actions, we aren't really sure what would happen.

To avoid situations like that for new players, we're leaving the current specification. We know people are interested in this, but...

Hardcore content elements to be opened over time

When the normal Alexander opens two weeks after launch, how quickly do you expect it to be cleared?

Yoshida: That's been a tough question to answer recently (laughs). I would expect that players in world's top five groups should be able to clear the four parts of it within about 6-8 hours. For parties that need time to test out the new mechanics and master the new job actions, well...

Forming a party for the first time would take a little longer to learn from trial and error. There's also trial and error figuring out the total DPS needed which can be difficult to predict. I'm guessing more experienced players should be able to get through it in about half a day without any breaks.

The Allagan Tomestones of Law equipment is item level 170, so will the Alexander equipment be higher than that?

Yoshida: Of course. You should look at getting full Law equipment as a basic minimum to be able to clear the normal Alexander raid dungeons. Since there's no weekly limit for them, you can spend the time to farm them.

You mentioned that the lotting method would be similar to Crystal Tower, but there was also some speculation that the difficulty would be on that level as well.

Yoshida: Well, please note that it's not as easy as Crystal Tower. By the way, in Alexander, weapons and armor are not dropped directly, you'll instead get tokens that can be exchanged for items. The lotting method is the same as Crystal Tower, but the way you obtain the equipment is different. For example, it'll be something like obtaining four "armor tokens" and exchanging them for a piece of armor.

So if you get the required number of armor tokens you can exchange them for equipment for any job?

    Yoshida: Yeah.

Any parting words to offer the players in advance of early access?

Yoshida: Since this interview happened before early access began, I have to admit that I'm quite nervous about whether the amount of logins will fall within our expected range to avoid congestion. It's hard to predict the number of new or returning players that we'll have, so there's a chance we'll get more than we're expecting.

Hopefully after the launch of Heavensward if I see people shouting "Yoshidaaaaa!" in various places it'll be for good reasons and not bad ones. We'll be paying attention and doing our best to keep people playing. Of course we'll have a full team involved who will be ready to take action after Heavensward is released.

Also, for the players, once the level cap opens, please take care, as you're no longer the powerful warrior of light. As you traveled around field areas until now you might have gotten a sense of safety, but this will be quite different and you'll be quickly overwhelmed by multiple foes or in FATEs, so please be careful! (laughs)

For enemies around your level range, you should try to keep things one on one. As you're leveling up, I hope you enjoy the feeling of opening treasure chests and seriously using the Need/Greed/Pass options for the first time in a long time. We hope you enjoy the expansion!

Aside from the Alexander stuff which I posted elsewhere, this is the first I'd seen that there are no new hunting log entries for existing classes or new jobs, which is a bit of a bummer.

Yo. I like you, Yoshi-P, but this is nonsense. WOW does this now. Hell. *You're* doing it now.

It doesn't have to be a per-character instance, you just have several different instances each representing the growth of the area. It'd probably also make it more realistic for new players too, as they progress in the story, Revenant's Toll starts getting busier and more bustling (because more endgame players are idling in the later versions).

So we can watch Kirito Kurosaki and his harem of animu bitches (token catgirl for worst race representation) valiantly struggle and near-wipe, so he can Mary Sue his way to a Turn 5 clear for a bunch of fucking shit-tier players in 2015?

Because that kind of seems what Shit Ass Online is all about.

Well, the same country who makes that tripe makes this. The same players who love that tripe love this. I could see it happening. We already have Lightning stepping through portals and shit.

Maybe we wont until the game goes F2P. Should be a few years yet.

To be fair the guy who originally wrote SAO has himself admitted that he did it when he was young and stupid and looking back he realizes what hot garbage it really is. Let's not also forget that we (general) have produced some terrible self-insert fan-fiction and the masses ate it up like it was high literature as well.

That said Japan gonna Japan and not really disagreeing with you, just pointing out that terrible taste is not restricted to them alone when it comes to this type of shit.

But we manage to keep it at contained on tumblr and fanfiction.net. Any time it leaks out onto 4chin or anywhere else, it tends to be laughed at and derided to the point where the person who gave birth to the atrocity ragequits.

Well, except for that Twilight shit and the various clones it spawned, but that's thankfully over (I hope).

Twilight and all of that "Tween Romance" bullshit is what I was mainly referring to and unfortunately as long as 12 year old girls and 40+ year old housewives exist to throw money at it don't expect it to die anytime soon.

Agree 100% on all accounts. Its just annoying the direction Japan has gone due to the recession. Most of today's Moeblob and vapid anime exists only due to the buying power of the previous generation completely vanishing. The only two constants that continue to purchase like before are Otaku Neets and Gyaru, both of whom have their entire identity formed around the things they buy instead of who they actually are, thus, the market curved sharply in their direction.

What could have been... more Cowboy Bebops and semi-serious series...

    Ah well. Life goes on.

I feel ya man. I'd settle for any sort of mediocre animu as long as it wasn't the moeshit tsunami we seem to be going through right now. Just gotta weather the storm and hope we come out better for it.

Japan is going to die within 30 years anyway, so its cool. No one's having kids, the men are virgins, the women hate the men for still conforming to outdated gender roles... its a beautiful clusterfuck.

Anytime you need to have classes on how to talk to a woman, you're fucked. Not pick up, not hit on, but simply TALK to. "Hello, how do you do?"

You're fucked, and you deserve to be.
