How to start a conversation when online dating?

Not sure if something like this has already been posted, but i just wanted to get some opinions on what to say in a first message to a potential first date.

This applies to all the online dating method now a days, Tinder, match.com etc etc.

I've been trying quite a genuine approach. "Hey, you alright" asking about their weekend, generally seeming interested etc but some people have said its better to stand out from the crowd and just be over confident, try a chat up line or just be outright and tell them they're hot.

Not to sure whats the best approach for this. Hoping BG has some advice it can dish out!? Experiences very welcome.

your methods will vary based on the site you're using. for example, a friend of mine has had great success on tinder using the following as his icebreaker: "if you sat on my face, I would eat my way to your heart."

If you are hot it doesn't matter, if you aren't hot you need to send a message with some thought but not too much. Usually involves commenting on one aspect of their profile in a not creepy way. Try imagining you are seeing that person in person. Like if they have pics with a dog, you might ask what type it is or how they like having a dog in the city etc., like you might in person if you ran into someone with a cute dog. You probably wouldn't walk up to someone and say "Wow nice golden retriever! I had one growing up named Jessie, she got hit by a car and it really helped drive me on my path to become TV's #2 dog whisperer. What do you do for fun?"

Go to r/OkCupid, look at the messages that are getting mocked, don't write those.

What I have done in the past (with varying success) is to pick one thing in the profile that I like and just comment on that. Such as "I see you like boardgames, what kinds do you like? I prefer strategic games (or can provide a specific example)".

Ive never really had to get that creative. The girl im dating now i knew before i right swiped on tinder which is an odd turn of events. I didnt know she was single.


But the previous girl i met on okcupid had a batman shirt on, and turns out she was a huge fan of the court of owls line of comics. So i started with that. Just be not creepy and youll usually get at least a response.
