Not really a lot of info...but if you're crashing to desktop I'd check out the video card and see if it's dying

No error messages anywhere? Uninstall the last 3 things you installed, or try a deep virus scan

If you haven't done it this way: Limit yourself to one stick of RAM, try each stick each slot and I do mean *try* it for several hours, alternatively run MEMTEST86 from a thumb drive. I'm leaning that or the drive, as the computer is okay when idle. I used CrystalDiskMark for my HDD testing.

Aside that, checking error logs can give some insight into what's happening, i.e drivers crashing which can be several things from RAM/HDD/the card itself (unlikely that).

This sounds 100% like a vga driver error. CPU or memory error would result in a much harder crash and much more demonstrated instability.

Uninstall your graphics driver using WagnardSoft's Display Driver Uninstaller then do a fresh clean install of the newest (or second to newest) ones.

If this doesn't solve the problem we can troubleshoot via gearing down your gpu.

Edit: just read your second post. Black screen CTD not being gpu related would be very strange. Try your chipset driver as well.

How old is the power supply?

If you haven't, also check your administrator logs to see if anything is registering in there. It may point you in the right direction.
