Today during the company’s Digital Days event, Ubisoft announced the development of Valiant Hearts: The Great War, a new video game that gives players the chance to live a touching yet comical adventure which follows the story of five characters whose destinies cross during the Great War. Valiant Hearts: The Great War will be available in the first quarter of 2014 on current- and next-generation platforms as well as PC digital.

Valiant Hearts is being developed by a small team at Ubisoft Montpellier, known for their work on critically-acclaimed titles like Beyond Good & Evil, Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends. The team is using the UbiArt Framework to easily and efficiently animate the game’s comic-book style, which consists of a wide-ranging color palette – from the dank trenches to green forests and snowy fields – that provides stunning scenic variety and visual contrast. Ubisoft’s UbiArt Framework is a powerful engine that lets programmers and artists to bring their art to life by allowing original concept art to be inserted unedited into the game world.

The story of Valiant Hearts The Great War focuses on the journey of five people as they brave the battles and difficulties of the Great War following their faithful canine companion. The game is set in the Western Front, a crossroads between World War One’s Allied and Central Powers and home to some of the War’s most intense military confrontations. All of the main characters are inextricably drawn together, and friendship, love, sacrifice and tragedy befall each as they help each other to retain their humanity against the horrors of war.

“As the WW1 centennial approaches, we felt it was the right time to explore such a unique yet almost forgotten time period in our history” said Paul Tumelaire, Creative Director, Ubisoft. “The UbiArt Framework engine helps us to use a strong art direction and great character-driven story-telling to both entertain and engage players emotionally.”.
