Technical Problem with USB controller

Not sure if this belongs in this forum but it seemed like the best place to post. I recently picked up the pc version of ffxi and then got a USB adapter to use my ps2 controller on my pc. I installed the adapter on the control panel and it works fine but as soon as i start ffxi it stops working. Now i was told to try going through my files to configure the controls for FFXI but that didn't work either. I went to my files (PlayOnline -> SquareEnix -> FINALFANTASY XI). Now when i go to the "config" file it says the data cannot be opened. Am i simply looking at the wrong file or something else? Any advice is appreciated.

Use the start menu and go to PlayOnline -> FFXI -> FFXI Config. That should open up a FFXI configuration window, and on the first tab it should say Gamepad settings. Click that & configure the control as you like, & it should work.
