consider a motherboard that supports the 1333fsb cpu's so you can buy the e8400 as it's faster then the one you picked but the same price.

not looking for anything better for graphics?

Pretty decent for a budget low-end build, you might want to consider a after-market heatsink if you plan to overclock

i'd have to disagree on spending $100 on a videocard, and not spending the extra 45-55 dollars for a 3850XT or 9600GT which is about 2.5 times faster in all games, than the card you linked to

Well I was making a post about the 8800GS or 3850 but yeah a 9600GT is fine too. :bagel:

    Definitely get an E8400 CPU over the 6850, it's a much faster architecture. 45nm > 65nm

The process size doesn't make a difference in speed at all. The architectures are different though, and there is a 2-15% improvement over the 65nm (code name Conroe) C2D's. Smaller processes use less energy and also output less heat, so they generally overclock higher. The 45nm chips as of right now seem to have major voltage issues above 1.4v, so with any overclocking on an E8400, I'd stay at or under 1.35v under you are sure what you are doing and have good cooling + good knowledge on overclocking and such.

I'd say P35, the DFI dark is a GREAT choice, hitting 600FSB on the 45nm's. The 650 and 680i are pretty shitty for overclocking the 45nm's and quads. The 780i is better, but it's only worth it if you need SLI, which in of itself, is not worth it, especially at your price range.

And for video card, as said before, the 9600GT rapes for it's price.

If you can spend $40 more, you get 340GB more.

Oh, and this monitor. It's got more pixels, still 19", and it's $5 less. I've got the 24" model and it's beautiful.

Don't buy that Sunbeam power supply. You're putting the life of your brand new computer/parts into the hands of a piece of shit, that if it even runs, it's likely to die soon after and take your parts with it. Buy this Corsair instead.

You made a good choice on the RAM, you could get away with the DDR2-800 kit, but the DDR2-1000 kit is great at that price.

Personally I think that that case is really fucking ugly, but it's your computer, your choice in cases. The only problem I have with cheap cases is that often times stuff doesn't fit correctly. If building your first PC, that can be unnerving. If you want to step up a bit, Coolermaster makes a lot of good cases at good prices.

That's about it, you're off to a good start

Forgive the larger pic, just way too much effort to link everything again.

Only thing I'm not certain on is the CPU, everything else I'm happy with.

Q9300? I must be behind on cpu's, when did that come out?

    Re: Building a new PC

What OS are you gonna use? If its 32 bit xp or Vista you're not going to be able to utilize all 4GB of memory.

Also if you plan to add hard drives or a 2nd video card later on... that PSU isn't going to cut it. If you plan to expand I'd go with a 750w just to future-proof yourself.

I don't like how the Q9300 only has a 7.5x multiplier which kinda sucks if you plan to overclock at all. Q6600 is about 100 bucks less and will probably perform just as well (and has a better multiplier) but its up to you. If you don't overclock don't worry about any of this.

Same deal with the 9600GT.. people have benchmarked it against the 8800gt and it comes out nearly the same, why bother paying more for something that's gonna give you the same performance.

Q9300? I must be behind on cpu's, when did that come out?
Just showed up on newegg a couple days ago. Extreme edition isn't out yet.

32 bit XP for OS and my knowledge of overclocking is turn it up as much as you dare and pray it doesn't explode ._.

Also the memory is only $99 for 4 gigs, even if I only need one for my pc and I can always sell the other stick to my brother cause he only has a 512 stick lol.

Yup, I'd advise going with a Q6600 over the Q9300 right now. I'd say a E8400 over the Q6600 though.

Don't look at the wattage, look at the amount of current on the 12v rail. A 41A 12+v rail is more than enough for this build.

To the OP, why are you sticking with the 680i motherboard? The P35 (DFI Dark I linked) is a much better overclocker, especially with the E8400 or any quad. SLI might give you a 25% gain at most. It's not worth it to be stuck with a bad motherboard.

    Re: Building a new PC

I was under the impression that SLI was going to give me a better boost? If not I'll get the P35 you linked, and learn how to overclock :<

    Re: Building a new PC

the 680i might not even work with the Q9300 right out of the box....that would be a piss off now wouldn't it?

After the terrible woes I've had with sli I can't say I hardly recommend it in the least bit.

    Re: Building a new PC

Getting told the exact same thing elsewhere, getting the Q6600 and P35 for sure now. Thanks a bunch!

    Re: Building a new PC

I have 2 8800GTs in SLI and I couldn't be happier with them. They do come with issues though. They're very finicky about drivers, usually when Nvidia comes out with a new driver release I have to uninstall, run a driver cleaner and then reinstall from scratch otherwise I get sporadic errors. The pain is worth it in the end though, my 3dmark06 score is 17k with them which is a pretty good score given my modest overclock.

That's another thing, GPUs are often bottlenecked by the CPU running on the system, because they can only process info as fast as the processor sends it. Overclocking can have a big impact on your graphics performance. I highly recommend this guide for learning the basics of overclocking on the 680i. If you get the p35 your menus will look different then shown in the guide, but it's still a good reference for getting started.

    Re: Building a new PC

SLI is fine if you need/want high resolutions. Other than that I can't see a justification for it, other people do though, and nvidia sells a lot of cards because of it.

But yeah, the 680i needs a BIOS update for 45nm or quads, and might not even work with the Q9300. If you must go SLI, the 780i is a better choice now, but it's also a lot more money.

The DFI dark series has been tested to hit over 600FSB with a dual core, and about 550FSB with a quad. My P35 (ASUS P5K-e) can do about 510FSB with a quad, and it's about the same price as the DFI.

    Re: Building a new PC

780i board is like $50 more then the good quad core revision 680i board. If you can manage yourself an A1 680i board you can OC a quad fine (33%+ OC easily, won't get anything like 10ghz or anything but people have managed 4.0ghz on a Q6600) and still have the option to go SLI.
