The Coronavirus that originated in China last year has now reached the U.S.

Chinese authorities have said the outbreak began in a seafood and live-animal market in the Chinese city of Wuhan. The virus, which is in the same family as SARS, MERS and the common cold, often circulates among animals but can mutate and infect people.

The Washington state patient, a man in his 30s, had traveled to Wuhan, but said he did not visit the market in question or know anyone who had the virus.

Cases also have been reported in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, as well as in Taiwan, Japan, Thailand and South Korea.

The U.S. began screening for the new virus at airports in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles on Jan. 17. The Washington state patient entered the United States before the screening system was implemented and before any of his symptoms developed.

Health officials said Tuesday they'll expand screenings to airports in Chicago and Atlanta.

A novel coronavirus (nCoV) is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans.

Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people. Detailed investigations found that SARS-CoV was transmitted from civet cats to humans and MERS-CoV from dromedary camels to humans. Several known coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected humans.

On 31 December 2019, the WHO China Country Office was informed of cases of pneumonia of unknown etiology (unknown cause) detected in Wuhan City, Hubei Province of China. A novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) was identified as the causative virus by Chinese authorities on 7 January.

Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is closely monitoring developments around a novel (new) coronavirus first identified in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. Chinese authorities identified the new coronavirus, which has resulted in close to 300 confirmed cases in China, including cases outside Wuhan City, with additional cases being identified in a growing number of countries internationally. From what I have been reading the symptoms of this new virus are a mix between a really bad flu and SARS. In fact for a bit they thought SARS was making a resurgence before realizing it was something completely new. Bad news. I hope it doesn't spread wide in the USA.

We'll see. As I posted, screening only began at three airports last Friday and the first confirmed case came from someone who entered the states before then. Could be a fair number of sleepers that haven't been diagnosed.

The Centers for Disease Control said the virus, which originated in China, had been diagnosed in a traveler who arrived in Seattle from China.

The patient diagnosed in the US returned from Wuhan on 15 January, the CDC said.

"The patient sought care at a medical facility in the state of Washington, where the patient was treated for the illness," it added in a statement.

"Based on the patient's travel history and symptoms, healthcare professionals suspected this new coronavirus."

Laboratory testing of a clinical specimen confirmed the diagnosis on 20 January, the CDC statement continued.

Seattle is not one of the entry points that is going to have screenings in the near future.

China decided Thursday to lock down three cities that are home to more than 18 million people in an unprecedented effort to try to contain a deadly new viral illness that has sickened hundreds and spread to other cities and countries in the Lunar New Year travel rush.

Police, SWAT teams and paramilitary troops guarded Wuhan's train station, where metal barriers blocked the entrances at 10 a.m. sharp.

In addition to the train station, airport, ferry, subway and bus services were also halted.

Similar measures will take effect from Friday in the nearby cities of Huanggang and Ezhou. Theaters, internet cafes and other entertainment centers were also ordered closed, further increasing the economic costs of the response to the outbreak.

Second U.S. case confirmed. Woman is from Chicago and re-entered the country on January 13th.

The patient felt symptoms after she returned home and was admitted to hospital "where infection control measures were taken to reduce the risk of transmission to other individuals," the CDC said in a press release.

Health officials in Chicago are "investigating locations where this patient went after returning to Illinois and are identifying any close contacts who were possibly exposed".
