I've only recently started watching this show (still watching Season 1), and I find it hilarious. But, having also recently watched the Godfather series again, I can't help but find striking parallels...it just seems like a great deal of the plotline was taken from the Godfather:

1) wealthy family involved in "dirty business"
2) four children, three boys & one girl
Corleones: Santino, Fredo, Michael, and I forget the daughter's name
Bluth: G.O.B., Buster, Michael, and I forget the daughter's name lol.
3) main character is the third son, both named Michael
4) the dad has chubby cheeks -- brando v. jeffrey tambor
5) the main character is obsessed with "family" and keeping it together"
6) the daughter is extremely vain and materialistic
7) the 2nd brother is "inept" -- Buster v. Fredo
8 ) the "heir" is in love with his cousin: Andy Garcia w/ Michael's daughter, George Michael with his cousin

there's more, i'm sure

Obviously, the show isn't the exact same as the godfather story, the mom plays a larger role, etc, but I can't help but think I'm watching a comedy version of the Corleones...

Fox made them cut down their third season from 22 episodes to 13, seems like it was canceled to me but given a way to tie things up.

and yea, the show keeps getting funnier and funnier. so far, having seen the first 19 episodes, my favorite is the one where it turns out Elaine isn't blind, and David Cross is using his cat-like agility to maneuver around the house. I couldn't stop laughing at that. As well, the 10 commandments being picked up right when michael/george michael were hiding, and fonzi getting ticketed

good stuff.

If it was cancelled, it woulnd't make sense, but it would make sense if the series ended otherwise--unlike most other comedies, the general storyline is very linear, so there's only so much (at least imo) that it can go on until it becomes too redundant redundant.

Totally not true. Aside from in-show jokes about getting cancelled and picked up by other networks, there were a lot of (ultimately unsuccessful) talks with cable channels to pick up Season 4. Also, the fact that Fox cut the allotted episodes for season 3 practically in half all points to AD being cancelled.

No, Fox did cancel it. They wrapped it up because it was cancelled and Fox was nice enough to allow them a final episode.
