FX chief John Landgraf aid, “We wrapped physical production on the limited series Shōgun in June, which was by far our biggest and most ambitious production ever. We still have a long process of post-production ahead of us but the show looks fantastic and will debut later next year.”

The series stars Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis and Anna Sawai.

Written by Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, Shōgun is set in feudal Japan. It charts the collision of two ambitious men from different worlds and a mysterious female samurai: John Blackthorne (Jarvis), a risk-taking English pilot major who ends up shipwrecked in Japan, a land whose unfamiliar culture will ultimately redefine him; Lord Toranaga (Sanada), a shrewd, powerful daimyo, at odds with his own dangerous, political rivals; and Lady Mariko (Sawai), a woman with invaluable skills but dishonorable family ties who must prove her value and allegiance.

The original book was very popular. I read it a long time ago but I don't remember much of the plot. I know the real history behind the story though. The book is based on the real life of William Adams, the first British man to travel to Japan, that eventually lead to the first formal trade and diplomatic relations with Japan and England.

I'm pretty psyched for this.

I'm a really old fart. I watched the original series when it came out. It got me into Japanese culture and history when I was a little kid. It transported me, a nerdy Jewish kid, that was super into knights and castles, into a different part and culture of the world with a totally different concept of knights and very different-looking castles. We didn't have internet, satellite TV, anime or manga so this really blew my mind. It actually led me into all things Japanese. I love this story, and am beyond excited to see it adapted anew.

That's cool. I was probably about two? When the first series was on TV, so too young to understand. It seems so goofy now like many other things from that time.. like oh.. early D&D but like you said there weren't as many forms of entertainment back then heh.
