What's the best free hard drive checking tool these days?

Noob at hard drives so I thought I'd just ask instead of wading through app after app.

I brought 2 "like new" drives from Amazon, external Western Digital passports. I would like to run a check through these to make sure they are healthy, and if not, throw it back at Amazon.

I suspect nothing should be wrong if they're like new, but I don't trust Amazon to check/test them.

    I've always used crystaldiskinfo.

I usually use HDTune (the "old" free version, not Pro). It can access SMART (if the SATA/USB chip supports it), has an error scan and a benchmark.

Thanks both, I'll use the 2 then and call it a day. If it checks out fine there's no need to keep poking it!
