Hitting NIN to 75 I had about 190 Parry, and after getting 100++ Merits, I managed to just get over 230. But I'm wondering If there's any proven stat or items that help level parrying skill, or increase amount of times you parry, etc.

Time.
Level PLD, NIN, and THF to 75, then use your NIN to solo VTs for solo exp, and in about a year, you should be able to cap it.
EXPing in Mamook has done wonders for my SAM parrying wise in a way.
I parry all the time being at 225 but I rarely see skill ups.
I think last 2-3 hour EXP PT I got .6 Parry.
Mob yourself with onions in upper boya.
Chigoes in Caedarva just outside Nashmau are good for shield/parry/guard skillups, but they'll take your HP down fast if you don't have some form of Stoneskin or Phalanx.
For leveling parrying, equip a weapon that your main and subjob do not have native skill in to avoid critical hits.
Example: RDM/BLU with Cocoon and Terra's Staff owns this.
A nin in my LS capped his parry recently at cerberus (good thing to skill on rly). He would gain points at random hnms (would know by him shouting OMG in ls chat). So yea, just do the vt solo thing, and tank hnms as often as possible. Sooner or later you'll get it.
And even then, with capped parrying and +parrying skill items, you're still not going to gain that much from it...certainly not worth the effort of actively trying to skill it up. Shield skill seems to be the only real defensive skill thats worth anything out of the shield/parry/guard set. Capped parrying just doesn't gain you that much damage mitigation, while not completely worthless it isn't much to hang your hat on either (unless you dig posting screen shots on forums everytime your parrying dings a level).
queue Demetrios coming on here...
I got most of my parrying skills at 75 meritting In Lufaise on NIN, the birds were pretty accurate, so when not evading, I tended to get more chances at parrying than I would say at main camp in sky, however those camps are dead now, and I rarely pull hate over WARs and some other NINs in Mamool Ja to be taking hits (My NIN isn't built for damage)
Sounds like you need to go solo, a lot.Originally Posted by tornfleshofsoul

Its alla but some nice thinking. The guy skills up parry on Om Yovra. Almost max now.
Actually guard is pretty awesome, for the same reasons that shield is good. With no defense buffs or food, besiege monsters hit me for 30 or less out of 2k+ HP when guardedOriginally Posted by draxyl

But parrying is definitely easiest to skillup compared to guarding (you can skill it up from many jobs, through shadows, and you get skillups a lot more easily/often). Shield is the easiest to cap so in a sense it's not quite as impressive
The difference here is that I've never come across a MNK with capped guarding, ever.Originally Posted by genome
Took forever to cap my parrying. I soloed a lot of mobs in sea for a very long time.

A fun way to cap it on Pld is letting your alliance get charmed by Orc NMs then hitting invincible & watching the skill ups roll in. I don't think it would work as well for a Nin though when the hits actually hurt...
I don't think you can skill up anymore if you take 0 damage.
For shield skill, yes you can. Do it all the time on RDM. While parrying, you don't take damage to begin with, so taking 0 damage there is moot too.Originally Posted by Serif
Dunno about Guard, but SE is lazy. My money says it's simply determined exactly like shield skill with a lesser proc rate.

My throwing skill was only 7 at the time so maybe that had something to do with it.
You can skillup ranged attacks on 0 dmg; I've done it a few times, particularly when I was levelling thf solo using venom bolts on worms who put up stoneskin.Originally Posted by Priran
For the record, the only thing they nerfed was skilling up melee weapons when doing 0 dmg. Mostly because you could signet-staff + afk in sea on the hpemdes, and come back with maxed skill.
i skill up Throwing while pulling in Dynamis.
