    Bravely Second: End Layer

This week’s Jump reveals Bravely Second, a sequel to Bravely Default, for 3DS.

Bravely Second is set in the same world as the original game. Players will embark once again on a great adventure of swords and magic.

Jump introduces Magnolia, a new silver-haired character “clad in the moon.”

Probably a good spot for this: http://www.polygon.com/2013/12/5/517...es-square-enix

    Spoiler: show
Veteran character designer Akihiko Yoshida, known best for his work on games including Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn, Final Fantasy Tactics and the recent Bravely Default titles, has left Square Enix after having worked with the games company since 1995.
Yoshida confirmed his leave from Square Enix in an artbook released today called "The Art of Bravely," which shipped with copies of Bravely Default: For the Sequel today in Japan, Siliconera reports.
The note, which can be seen above, translates to: "This is a personal message of mine, but I'd like to say thank you for all the support these past 18 years. I have decided to leave Square Enix, but I believe our relationship will continue going on. And as long as I'm needed [laughs,] I will continue working on the Bravely Default series. Thank you for your continued support.
Bravely Default main character designer & lead artist,
    Akihiko Yoshida."

Seems like hes going to work freelance now (including for SE/Bravely Default series), but still sad to see him leave SE.

    Story

The story’s stage is Luxendarc. It is set in the world several years after the Warriors of Light saved it from crisis.

    Magic University Town Istantarl

This university town was built in the Nadarakes continent under the proposal of the Lakrika prime minister. Scholars and students around the world gather here every day, exchanging discussions about all sorts of intellectual topics. Because it prospers particularly in the study of magic, it is known by the nickname “Magic University Town.” Thanks to the help of professors, a new structure of magic has been developed, different from the traditional method.

New Character: Devil King Buster Magnolia Arch

A mysterious woman who calls herself the “Devil Buster who came from the moon.” Her age is unknown, she appears in unexpected places at unexpected times, and she has a daredevil attitude. According to the Devil King who suddenly appeared, she is the last survivor of the moon nation.

She is a sociable eccentric. Delicate, but largehearted. Realistically, a romanticist. An elegant beauty with elusive characteristics, only one thing is certain, she has fierce fighting skills and rescued Tiz Oria.

The first trailer will be shown at Jump Festa 2014

The game will be bigger, more to do

(The above trailer appears after the ending credits from For the Sequel)
This week’s issue of Famitsu brings more details on Bravely Second, the sequel to Bravely Default, currently in development for the Nintendo 3DS. Details on the game were provided by producer Tomoya Asano and character designer Akihiko Yoshida.

Magnolia (above) is the main protagonist of Bravely Second. She plays a role similar to Agnes in Bravely Default, and will travel with her at some point in time. Magnolia has been designed to look more adult than Agnes, though, and for this reason, she—and, by necessity, the other characters in Bravely Second—have slightly more realistic proportions.

Since the game is set in Luxendarc like Bravely Default, we assume we’re going to see a few recurring characters, especially since Square Enix’s original announcement revealed that Magnolia had, at some point, rescued Bravely Default’s Tiz Arrior. Asano and Yoshida add that Ringabel’s role in Bravely Second is unknown at present.

Bravely Second’s plot involves a “Demon King” and the moon, both of which are new additions related to the story. Keep in mind that Magnolia is a self-professed Demon King killer from the moon, and Asano says that her world will be one of the places in the game that you’ll get to explore. A teaser trailer for the game is present in Bravely Default: For the Sequel.

Speaking of exploration, Bravely Second’s fields are larger than those of Bravely Default, and the “density” of the game has increased as well. While Second will be adopting a lot of the systems introduced in Bravely Default: For the Sequel, Square Enix say there’s still a possibility that changes will be made in accordance with user feedback from that game.

Bravely Second is currently 30% complete, so it’ll take a little while longer before players are able to get their hands on the game.

so I assume the localization of this one will depend on the success of NA/EU bravely default. Everyone better buy that game! suffering from a severe RPG drought.

The original BD will never be localized; this game is basically it's replacement (newgame+ sort of deal), and has already been announced that it's coming stateside.

Hmm no. You're referring to Bravely Default: For the Sequel which IS the first game with a few changes here and there and is coming to the US soon (it's out in EU). Bravely Second is a whole new game.

Eh, you're right, I thought this was the original BD thread, not the sequels'.

Bravely Second Producer Aims To Release A New Bravely Game Each Year
Square Enix teased fans with a new trailer for Bravely Second at Jump Festa and all eyes are on the upcoming sequel of Bravely Default. Producer Tomoya Asano shared a few details on Bravely Second’s new character and development status during an interview with Dengeki.

Before moving onto the subject of Bravely Second, according to Asano, there actually haven’t been too many players who’ve purchased the SP Drinks in Bravely Default: For the Sequel, items that you can use during bottles which allows you to freeze time and do increased damage, a little something for players to get through the tougher parts of the game if they have trouble.

“There haven’t been many [buyers,] but it’s not something that troubles us,” says Asano. “On the other hand, we weren’t expecting it to sell too much, so we could say that it’s sold more than we had expected.”

On the subject of SP Drinks, Dengeki asks if the SP system will still be available in Bravely Second.

“Yes, that’s what we plan, but we’ll be using player feedback and data uploaded by Square Enix members as reference, and may make some changes accordingly… it wasn’t that bad right?” shares Asano with a laugh.

While speaking of what Bravely Second will carry on from Bravely Default, Dengeki points out that upon clearing the true ending of Bravely Default: For the Sequel, the game allows you to store your data on the Nintendo 3DS SD card. They ask what will it be used for in the upcoming game.

“We’d like to prepare some sort of benefit that it can be used for in Bravely Second, but honestly speaking, we’ve yet to decide on what,” says Asano. “So for now, please bear with the idea of ‘If you save your data [from the previous game] there may just be something good waiting for you.”

Dengeki asks Asano how far along are they currently in the development of Bravely Second.

“We’ve completed the scenario outline, and we just about figured out how many things we’ll be required to make for it,” shares Asano. “We’re currently working on the artwork, while throwing in what gets finished into the game.”

Asano also says that Bravely Second will be made to still be enjoyable for those who’ve yet to play the first game, but he still recommends players to play the first game in order to fully enjoy the upcoming sequel.

We recently got a look at a new Bravely Second character by the name Magnolia. Dengeki asks if it’s safe to assume that she’ll be one of the heroines in the upcoming game.

“That’s right. For Bravely Default, we originally pushed a little for the heroine, Agnes; however, in the end, she was surpassed by Edea in the popularity polls,” shares Asano with a laugh. “While we don’t know how Magnolia will be at the end, for now, we’re handling her as a proper heroine.”

In an earlier interview, producer Tomoya Asano mentioned that Magnolia will be a character who shows “adultness,” a feature he considered lacking in the original four heroes of Bravely Default. Now that Magnolia will be part of the mix, Dengeki asks if that also means we’ll be seeing a different party mood in Bravely Second.

“The four protagonists of Bravely Default were loved by everyone, so on top of thinking of the party’s balance, roles, and the structure of Bravely Second, there are actually a few parts we’re struggling on at the moment,” answers Asano.

In case you’re wondering, Asano also mentions that the weapon Magnolia is wielding on her illustration is actually a spear-type. They wanted an image that depicted her as a fighting female, so they went with a halberd. Dengeki asks if she’ll be some sort of magic knight, due to her being from the moon, but Asano says that won’t be the case.

Finally, Dengeki ends the interview by asking the producer when can we expect to see Bravely Second be released.

“Personally, I’m aiming to release a game for the Bravely series at least once a year,” says Asano. “So, we’d like to release Bravely Second for sometime in 2014.” Bravely Second is currently in development for Nintendo 3DS.

    Subtitle incoming
Back in December, we translated an interview in Famitsu magazine with Bravely Second producer Tomoya Asano and character designer Akihiko Yoshida. In the interview, Yoshida and Asano discussed the improvements being made to the game and how it was progressing.

In the same interview, which is now up on Famitsu.com, Asano also mentioned another little tidbit about Bravely Second—that the game will have a subtitle as part of its final name.

The previous game in the series, Bravely Default, used the subtitle of “Flying Fairy” in Japan, which was a reference to various aspects of the game. While the updated version of that game, Bravely Default: For the Sequel, didn’t have a similarly meaningful subtitle, Asano feels that taking the same approach with Bravely Second would disappoint fans.

And so, Bravely Second, like the first game, will also use a subtitle with some sort of hidden meaning.

    More Story, Less Exploration
Bravely Default, Square Enix’s new role-playing franchise, is a big deal for the RPG community. It’s the first brand new RPG franchise that Square Enix have successfully debuted in a long time, and the fact that it draws inspiration from the older Final Fantasy games certainly isn’t a bad thing either. Most importantly, it’s been selling very well in Japan, which means it’s here to stay.

Siliconera recently caught up with Bravely series producer Tomoya Asano to ask him about the future of the franchise and its goals. At present, Asano is currently at work on a brand new Bravely game, titled Bravely Second, which will expand the world of Luxendarc. A teaser trailer for Second is present within Bravely Default, and it makes the game look a little more action-oriented, with a more dynamic camera.

When we asked Asano if this meant that Bravely Second would be more of an action game, he replied that it wouldn’t.

“No, Bravely Second will still follow the turn-based battle system,” Asano said to Siliconera. “When we looked at the original system in Bravely Default: Flying Fairy for Bravely Second, the improvements made to the basic system were implemented in Bravely Default: For the Sequel.”

“Thanks to this, player reaction has been very positive post-launch, so many of these systems should follow through to Bravely Second as well.”

[Note: “Bravely Default: For the Sequel” is the game known simply as "Bravely Default" in the west, and contains the improvements Asano is referring to.]

Asano also let us know that Bravely isn’t a series that is focused on exploration. Rather, it’s meant to be more of a story-driven experience. This is why Bravely Default doesn’t make enemies visible on the map—referred to as “symbol encounters” in Japan—and instead, opts to use an adjustable random encounter rate, in order to let players streamline their experience. This system will remain in Bravely Second.

“Originally, showing exploration more naturally is not something we put importance on because [the game] consists of deformed characters walking on a deformed map,” Asano shared. “However, having symbol encounters is convenient in that it allows players to engage in battles at their own pace. The adjustable encounter rate accomplishes this.”

That said, Bravely Second will expand the world of Luxendarc in a different way way.

“Bravely Second expands Luxendarc, but it might be slightly different than an ‘RPG with an expansive world you can explore’,” Asano stated. “Rather, it will basically be like Bravely Default in that it will be driven by the story. Thought processes change depending on the goal of the game, and with Bravely, the thought process is that characters are there for the gameplay and the world is there for the characters.”

An interesting point worth mentioning is that Asano says both Bravely Default and Bravely Second target adult audiences. Asano pointed to the adult audiences of both Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy as the target audience for the Bravely games. In the past, Asano and character designer Akihiko Yoshida have said that Bravely Second’s heroine, Magnolia, is turning out a little more adult in nature than Bravely Default’s characters.

On the subject of Magnolia, Asano said to us, “With regards to Magnolia, we wanted to focus on new characters rather than the current four. It should be interesting, so I hope you are looking forward to it!”

Bravely Second hasn’t been officially announced for a release in the west yet, and Nintendo of America tell us there are “no plans at the moment” regarding a U.S. release. That said, Asano has stated in the past that he would like to bring the game to western players, provided Bravely Default does well enough.

    New Details
    • Guatelatio

A city that has long been prosperous, Guatelatio sits at the entrance to the highway that leads to the Temple of Earth and the Holy Land. Home to the Crystal Orthodoxy’s headquarters, as well as numerous villas and estates belong to especially faithful aristocrats and various other prominent families, at the northern edge of town sits the Gate of Faith, an important military institution tasked with defending the Holy Land that employs the “Orthodox Knights,” a group that the Orthodoxy holds in high regards.

When the Duchy of Eternia was in its prime, Guatelatio managed to rid itself of the Orthodox Knights and barely attain recognition as autonomous entity, but with the Orthodoxy and Duchy’s relationship taking a turn for the peaceful, the city eventually becomes the former’s official capitol city, bringing with it renewed construction of the cathedral and a return to bustling life in general. There were plans to hold the signing ceremony for the peace treaty in Guatelatio, but things don’t go quite as planned….

    • Agnes Oblige

Agnes traveled the world with her allies in years past, overcoming numerous troubles and ultimately driving back the Great Void that brought Luxendarc to the brink of calamity. In the wake of the decade-long Passion Period, she miraculously puts the then-collapsing Crystal Orthodoxy back together, ultimately becoming the only fourth pope the Orthodoxy has ever seen and the first one to rise to such a position in centuries. Not only is she on friendly terms with many important players, but she also enjoys massive popularity with the common people and has put her heart and soul into realizing lasting peace between the Orthodoxy and Eternia. However, when the time comes for the peace treaty ceremony, she ends up getting kidnapped.

    • Jobs
      • Valkyrie – Valkyries are an offensive class that do their dirty work by attacking from mid-air and fleeing. As such, they’re especially potent when BP is spent during their attacks. The recommended weapon for them is a spear.
      • Superstar – Superstars buff up friendly characters by singing them songs, with bolstered stats potentially including, but not limited to, offense, defense, and BP. Given their main role as a buffing job, Superstars are equipped with myriad abilities to get their work done.
      • Time Mage – Time Mages are tacticians who control the flow of time during battles to their advantage. Characters with this job are better able to heal the entire party simultaneously and deal proportional damage relative to the enemies’ HP. Their weapon of choice is the wand.
      • Red Mage – Red Mages can utilize both White and Black Magic. This makes them a hybrid class of sorts that’s well-rounded when it comes to healing and offensive magic, as well as buffs and debuffs.

Supercell's Ryo to replace Revo as the composer
Supercell’s ryo will be in charge of the music for Bravely Second, this week’s issue of Famitsu magazine reveals.

Unfortunately, Revo, who created the music for Bravely Default, will not be contributing to the sequel, due to scheduling conflicts. Bravely Second will mostly feature new music from ryo, but certain tracks from Bravely Default will return as well, such as music from the game’s towns.

Famitsu also mentions that a new trailer featuring ryo’s music for the game will be released in the near future.

Finally, it has been revealed that, like Bravely Default, a demo will be made available for Bravely Second.

Producer Tomoya Asano and assistant producer Shinji Takahashi taking over writing duties
Bravely Second will see new characters and familiar faces, but it looks like the game’s development team is also seeing a few changes.

Yesterday, we reported that Revo, the composer for the first game, will not be contributing to Bravely Second due to scheduling issues, and taking his place is Supercell’s ryo. Meanwhile, Famitsu magazine reports that the game has a new team of writers as well.

In the case of Bravely Default, the game’s story was handled by Naotaka Hayashi, who is also known for writing 5pb’s Steins;Gate. However, Hayashi is not involved in Bravely Second, and instead, the game has a team of multiple writers.

Producer Tomoya Asano and assistant producer Shinji Takahashi will work on Bravely Second’s scenario, according to Famitsu.

Meanwhile, director Kensuke Nakahara and Bravely Default lead scenario planner Keiichi Ajiro (both from Silicon Studio), alongside Souki Tsukishima, who wrote the light novel series for the game, will all be working on the scenario for the game as well.
