    Computer> computer FFXI transfer

My old laptop has windows vista 32 and now I have a desktop with vista64.

I have copied all the files from the laptop to desktop.

Also I have exported the registry for FFXI from the registry editor to the new desktop.

The problem I'm running into is I'm getting all the way to the Play button and when I push it, I am told FFXI is no installed yet in the POL folder I have the exact same files as on the laptop which works.

I'm a little confused on what to do at this point to fix it. Have a missed a step?

Yup, you need to add the registry entries into the windows-on-windows node in the relevant folders, and change all the references for stuff from Program Files to Program Files x86...

It's gonna be easier to reinstall. Copying across architectures is a pain in the ass.

I was having this same prob going from XP to Vista and what ended up working for me is that I just installed the regular game (I don't have the discs for the expansions) and then copied all the folders over and it worked fine for me

I really dont understand why people just dont a complete install on new PCs. Yeah, you can transfer files and minipulate the registry a bit, but even then theres always a good chance there will be a screw up and it wont work.

Dont transfer things aside from your macros, do a full install. If youre too impatient to wait for the updates, just do it over night.

If you can get it to work out the way I did, you only need to torrent the original FFXI (to get it in the registry) then copy over all the files and it should work. No need to download all the expansions when you don't need to

Some of us have ISPs that have a monthly usage limit on our connection, and they bill us per GB we go over the limit. Unnecessary patching uses up our quota, while a file transfer between machines on the LAN doesn't. Also, keeping a copy of the folder on a portable drive is what you should be doing anyway as a backup, and it's easy to verify the files and restore you install much faster this way.

The only thing you can really screw up is that different versions of Windows store the PlayOnline registry tree on a slightly different branch. You can adjust for that with a simple find-replace command in the REG file if you open it as text.
