TOKYO - Toyota Motor Corp. is developing a fail-safe system for cars that detects drunken drivers and automatically shuts the vehicle down if sensors pick up signs of excessive alcohol consumption, a news report said Wednesday.

Cars fitted with the detection system will not start if sweat sensors in the driving wheel detect high levels of alcohol in the driver's bloodstream, according to a report carried by the mass-circulation daily, Asahi Shimbun.

The system could also kick in if the sensors detect abnormal steering, or if a special camera shows that the driver's pupils are not in focus. The car is then slowed to a halt, the report said.

The world's No. 2 automaker hopes to fit cars with the system by the end of 2009, according to the report. Calls to Toyota's headquarters in Nagoya rang unanswered on Wednesday, a public holiday.

Nissan Motor Co., another Japanese car manufacturer, has already been experimenting with breathalyzer-like devices that could detect if a driver was drunken. Similar technologies, such as alcohol ignition interlocks, are in use in the U.S. and elsewhere.

Concerns over drunken driving have surged in Japan following a series of alcohol-related accidents last year. In August, a drunken driver collided with another vehicle carrying a family of five, plunging them off a bridge and killing three children.

The incident prompted stepped-up roadside spot checks by police, who also plan to stiffen penalties for drunken driving.

It is interesting and frightening at the same time. It is great to take drunk drivers off of the road, but scary about what other data these sensors may collect without our knowledge...

I'm not even talking about illegal activities. I mean things like tracking where people go, how long they stay there, etc.

For example, I'm seeing a horrible world where credit card companies team up with the auto makers so that billboards display custom ads for things that you commonly buy as your car approaches...

Yeah, it is a smart idea, but depends how they will use it. I don't like the idea of having someone's privacy practically revoked.

I dont like the idea of cameras at all. When I drive with someone or alone, I can potentially say some sensitive stuff, such as my CC # or other sensitive info. I dont like that it can be readily avaliable. The cameras dont even need to have a microphone because people can read lips

Apparently I can win a free PlayStation 3 if I think Britney Spears' career is over.

But this whole anti-drunk driving system still fails, because the people most likely predisposed to drunk driving - being young people ages 18 to 25 - won't be driving a 2009 model car because they can't afford anything other than a 1999 Pinto.

Nothing will ever beat simply not driving while intoxicated. Period.

Uh, think long term. Even the current new models become shitty used cars eventually...

    lol, have you trouble reading?

i'm talking about how internet companies collect information about you from websites you use and show you ads that might interest you

for example: have you ever used the internet to check on movie showtime? if you have then you've probably put in your zip code too... now pay attention to some of the "dating website" ads you probably ignore all the time, it probably show something like "hot dates in _____ (fill in the blank with the city you live in)"

I'm pretty sure they do that based on IP address, or just querying the ISP or something. Because I've moved this computer back and forth to college and back to home repeatedly, and those things can always tell exactly what city I'm in.
