FF XI on PC with gamepad?

I was wondering how a gamepad with FF XI on PC works? I was thinking of something like this one:

or a similar USB-controller. Myabe some of you have a good one you can post a link to?

Is it easy to set up and get it to work? Is it good to play with if you don't need to write much on keybaord?

just got it a few days ago, worked like a dream, no drivers needed

ff12 made me able to play ffxi with a controller, kinda nice

I have been looking in some webshops for the xbox controller, and they sell one for PC and one for Xbox... what is the difference? Isn't xbox also USB? Myabe PC-version just comes with a extra CD with drivers? The one for PC is a little bit more expencive... Does the wireless version of this controller work with PC?

I find it a lot easier to play with my controller than on my laptop (keyboard).

When my PS2 pad broke, playing using keyboard and mouse made me cry. I would not recommend a 360 pad, I tried it once and unplugged the bugger straight away.

I broke two PS2->PC controller boxes by hitting them with static electricity somehow. After that I got a Saitek P2500 and have been using it for about 2.5 years now. I don't know if it's still on the market but it's a good controller.

This is the one I have and it's awesome (though I dont really play ffxi w/a controller. I dunno how anyone does >_>)

It feels enough like a ps2 controller and all the same # of buttons... and has great range.

I got some logitech controller. Reason I loved it was for playing rng since you gotta press buttons alot to shoot. It was different than the normal ps2 controller because you could macro each button however you wanted. So you would record certain key strokes to each button, and could have multiple different customizations of buttons. IE; I set like r1 to be control, pause.1, 5 or something, so it would be ctrl+5 and shoot off my bow. and my select button was like alt, wait .1, 3 which would make me barrage. I set L1 to ctrl + a to turn on auto attack.

I think with ps2 controller it forces you to scroll through the ctrl/alt macro pages to select the one you want. I like the controller where you can give it specific command macros better so that each button has a purpose and you can select cast things very quickly like pressing ctrl 1-0 on a keyboard vs scrolling through macros to pick one

edit: mine is like the one the guy that posted above me has. Except mine has a cord. 4 buttons in mid, 4 top, 4 on right, 2 joystick + directional pad, gives 12 macroable buttons ;D

FFXI is nearly impossible to fucking play without a controller. Seriously. I love my camera control on an analog stick.

If you have a Fry's in your area, they sell PC to PSX adapaters, USB, for around 10 bucks. Plug in your PS2 controller and you're set. Only thing that doesn't work for me is the vibration, but natch.
