Dragon Quest XI: In Search of Departed Time/Echoes of an Elusive Age (PS4/3DS) | DE (NSW) - Sept 27

Next Project is in Production, May have been Hinted at too Soon
Square Enix is currently “making the next” Dragon Quest, series creator Yuji Horii said at Niconico Super Conference 3 in Chiba.

He didn’t say whether it was Dragon Quest XI, but given that it’s a numbered series and the word “next” was used, we’re assuming that’s what he’s referring to.

However, when Horii made the comment, Dragon Quest X producer Yosuke Saito and chief planner Anzai Takashi looked as though they weren’t expecting him to say that, as if it might have been something he shouldn’t have said.

I am wondering if maybe this is what Nintendo has up their sleeve for the Wii U.

Could be wishful thinking, probably is wishful thinking, but interesting...

My other reaction was just that: Mobile.

It's going to be the 3DS. Square likes the platform and their current-gen dev resources are busy on other games.

    Not for Mobile
Square Enix has been focusing a lot on smartphone development lately, and quite a few Dragon Quest ended up on smart devices. Thankfully according to the series’ creator Yuji Horii, this won’t be the case with the next chapter of the series.

In an interview on the V Jump website (reading it requires a password published on the magazine) Horii-san mentioned that smartphone games are currently mainstream because they can be played when you have a bit of spare time, but he wants to develop something bigger. That’s why he wants to be “more aggressive” with the next Dragon Quest and he doesn’t intend to make it for smartphones.

Horii-san himself let it slip a few weeks ago that said next Dragon Quest game is already in development, even if we don’t have any information on whether it’ll be called Dragon Quest XI or about it’s platforms. Now at least we know that it won’t be on smartphones.

It's sad when they have to confirm that, but thank god.

That also means it won't be on 3DS for similar reasons. While the 3DS is a dedicated gaming handheld if he wants to make something bigger it's better suited for consoles. Which means Wii U or PS4.

Dragon Quest XI confirmed as the title, to be released in 2016
Dragon Quest XI is currently in development, series creator Yuji Horii said during a recent radio program.

Horii appeared on the FM West Tokyo Radio program Mangaku N-Channel SP, where he said the sequel was in development for the first time.

The program featured a look back at the Dragon Quest series, with Horii recalling his personal experiences and stories.

When the topic of Dragon Quest‘s future came up, Horii said development of Dragon Quest XI is advancing towards the series’ 30th anniversary, which is in 2016. He also said he wants to play it on a big screen, suggesting the game is in development for console (rather than smartphones). A specific platform was not revealed.

Unless Nintendo pays for it the odds of it making it to the Wii U are extremely low. PS4 is similarly out. 3DS is the best choice from a business perspective unless you think the situation below will reverse itself in the next two years.

Those are last week's .jp hardware sales. Mario Kart's bump is accounted for in them.

Dragon Quest is Japan's console seller though. They put that out on a console and it will sell like hotcakes.
I'll hold my breath for a console DQ.

Edit: I'm not saying that making it for the 3DS would be a better business strategy but maybe if I was Nintendo or Sony I'd be trying to coax them into making it for my console. Who knows lol.

I wouldn't put it past SE's record-breakingly inept management to move a series that was a multimillion seller to a console that by this point in 2016 will have an install base of at most 3.5~4mil, in a domestic marketplace that continues to ignore home game consoles at an increasing rate.
I'm just saying that if they don't have their heads completely up their asses, they won't publish DQ XI on WiiU or PS4.

P.S. nothing is a console seller in Japan anymore. Mario Kart 8 fell off a cliff, so did Pikmin 3. Super Mario did this its first week

SE is hardly in a position to gamble with a major IP on a dying platform on a vague promise that 'oh maybe more people will buy hardware for it' a second time. They might, but I hate to assume the worst of them at every turn.

I mean I'm looking forward to see what it's going to be like, but nothing will be DQ8 in my book. That's one of my favorite rpg's of all time.
