I've been thinking about this for a while and I've gotten a lot of different opinions. Which would be most beneficial in the long run? Leveling clothcraft first, then leather, goldsmithng, and smithing, or vice versa?

in the long run, the order doesn't matter as long as you get them all up.
Leather->60
Smith->60
Gold->60
No other subs are needed but it's nice to have Alch->60 and Wood->60 as well.
I really suggest you get leather/smithing to 60 if you plan on not power-leveling threw the 90's.
OBVIOUSLY you should have cooking 60, first. >.>
Dude, that's OBVIOUSLY second. Fishing -> 100 first. It's crucial.Originally Posted by Carbon

I was really asking the order of importance when I comes to leveling these. Sorry if I didn't make that clear.
Leather to 60 first, that opens up the options of some extra synths like Jester's Capes. Or making money from Seer's Noct.
Smithing to 60 second because it does open up some more stuff in terms of high level NIN gear (shinobi, arhat's, etc).
Gold last because that's mostly for Errant Body which is one of the last things you'll do.
I'm working on Leathercraft sub right now myself. Going to do Goldsmithing since the materials are more readily farmable for myself (I'm the type of person who goes out of his way to farm materials, as opposed to purchasing them).
If you choose to farm your materials, I don't know the price of Dhalmel Leather stacks on your server, but from farming the materials to get those, and selling the profit, from 13ish->21 I made and sold that shit for 50k/stack on Fairy. <3 money It's actually a pretty good racket :D This is excluding expenditures on travel costs (Outpost Warp/Chocobos), however, random miscellanous items that dropped that I could sell typically covered that cost.
It's listed in order. Leather/Smithing/GoldOriginally Posted by Solund
I've been so lazy with my subs. I did get leather up right away ages ago since I knew so many skillup synths used that. Once I hit 94 I'm going to hunker down and get smithing the rest of the way up and finally gold.
I'll prob do bone eventually as well to make those yag heads.
