    Building a new PC

So the last time I've built a PC was about 5 years ago, and this one I'm posting on is on its last leg. I can play games fine on it, but I think the videocard is fried.

In any case, I haven't really been up to date with what's good so maybe you all can give me some input on building a new one.

    Uses for PC:
    Porno
    Music
    WoW (like once a month)
maybe FFXI if I ever find the desire
    and doing my banking
and any other cool games that come out

I'd like to get a PC I don't need to worry about for another 5 years (like this one).

    current PC stats:
    AMD Athlon 3000+
    2.00GHz
    1.0GB RAM

Not looking to spend more than 1500ish (I work part time at a retailer that I can get discounts, so that's why I'm building and not buying premade.)

I understand the basis: motherboard, vid card, ram, etc, but i don't know what's standard these days so that's where i'll need help.

    Re: Building a new PC

You really don't need to spend $1500 to get a nice built PC, especially if you can get discounts like you say. Also, it's pretty hard to future proof for 5 years, given how fast technology advances. But anyway...

I'm not that up to date on AMD processors, but I know their quad cores are not on-par with Intel's at this point. As far as future proofing goes, you should pick up a quad core as it will ensure you're not that far behind. Dual Cores are fine now, but as technology moves forward quad cores will eventually make a name for themselves. Wether that's a year or 3 years down the road is anyone's guess.

Graphics cards come out almost every 6 months if not earlier so you're going to have to upgrade it sooner or later. Right now I'm a fan of the 8800gt, for around 150-200 it performs as well as anything. If you want to go crazy there's the 9800gx2 or similiar ones, but they're expensive.

You'll also want to pick up 2 or 4 gigs of ram depending on what operating system you like.

Thanks, this is the kinda stuff I'm looking for. I've got a single processor (I'm guessing this is what you mean by dual/quad) right now and it used to be a blazing fast machine about 5 years ago, but now its really really really slow.

For my OS, I'll probably just load my XP on it again. I'm gonna do some browsing on newegg, see what I can find and try to assemble a build for someone here to look over (make sure I'm not doing a big no-no).

    Re: Building a new PC

$1500 will build an awesome PC these days, I like the E8400 for a CPU, I agree with ceph on the 8800GT and you usually can't go wrong with a decent Gigabyte board. If you do go for an E8x00 CPU, make sure to check the board you buy is compatible with a 45nm CPU.

Do a prototype build using the newegg wishlist thingy, then come back and post it and we'll opine ^_~

I'll help you build and live out my dream computer ideas.

    CPU: One of intel's new 45nm core 2 duo's http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819115037

Vidya: Looks like the 8800gt is the best bang for your buck right now. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814130319

Mobo: Asus is a great manufacturer of motherboards; heres one that supports your cpu and has ddr2 1200 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813131219

    Case: P182 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 5&Tpk=p182

    Ram: 2 GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820134430

    Psu: Corsair makes great psu's; heres a 750W one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817139006

    cd / dvd combo drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6827106072

That's about it I think... And will kick major ass even if you don't game alot

    http://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/wis ... r=11256807

that is what im ordering this week, it includes everything, os, proc, ram, mobo, etc etc (minus keyboard and speakers which i got elsewhere)

also note you can spend way less than $1500 and build a very good pc that can do everything you want it for, however it wouldnt be as future proof as you want... but it would work

    Re: Building a new PC

For $1500 you can build a nice PC. I just built a new PC with the following and it was under $1500

    EVGA Mobo 780i chipset - $249.99
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813188024

    Intel Quad Core CPU - Q6600 - $219.99
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819115017

EVGA 8800GT AKIMBO(1GB) - $284.99 (I have two of these in SLI but you only need one to handle most games)
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814130336

along with other little tid-bits like RAM, power supply, etc and you'll still be under $1500

As far as the RAM debate goes, I'm partial to Corsair, but that's just me. Everyone is different. I'm also a fan of EVGA stuff as you can see. My new PC has taken everything I've thrown at it so far and hasn't broken a sweat.

Same here I built a computer and it lasted 7 years before a game came out it could not play. It could not support pixel shader 2.0 and I figured this out the hard way when I bought Supreme Commander.

Then it broke all together so I built a new one for about $300 just enough to get me by for a bit until I can save up more.

    Re: Building a new PC

I tried doing a laptop when I went away to college and I thought the same thing, I wanted a laptop to do it all play games and be useful. But in my experience and honestly do not get a laptop for gaming. Split the budget you want to spend in half get a desktop for gaming and a laptop for school.

A laptop that can play games will never be as good as a desktop and bug you on games because the monitor isn't big enough or the laptop isn't quite fast enough and if it is trying to be a gaming laptop it will be so massive and heavy that it will piss you off when you actually want it to be a laptop. I would spend $1500 on a gaming computer and $2000 on a nice light small laptop that you can watch movies on and do school stuff.

    Re: Building a new PC

Yeah I really don't reccomend getting a gaming laptop either. I got one back in 2001 and it cost me around $2000. It had a P4 @ 3.2 Ghz, 1gb of ram, and an ati mobility 9700. So it is practically useless now. I would say get one that is light, has awesome battery life, and a bright screen. I would reccomend a dell latitude (business section) or a insprion (home section). Save your money for building a godly gaming desktop with a 22" widescreen lcd and sweet speaker set up.

BUT if you really really really are set for a gaming lappy, get this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6834220308
My friend has an older asus gaming laptop and it is doing well with current games.
