Turkish Lira v. the Dollar after the news
Binali Yildirim, the prime minister, confirms a coup is in motion by elements within the army, refers to it as a mutiny, promises the Erdogan regime will resist and punish the perpetrators.
Turkish prime minister says military coup underway; vows those responsible will pay highest price.
Apparently tanks outside the airport in Istanbul
BRUH WHO COMING FOR THE CROWN? IS IT THE MUSLIES?
Official statement from the Turkish Armed Forces says it has taken over the government.
secular coup would be so 2016
the coup is almost assuredly secular given Erdogan's diet-Islamism and the military's fiercely secular tradition. that said the military is likely more motivated by Erdogan's authoritarian leanings + his reduction of the military's political influence, as well as his tepid responses to both ISIS terrorism and increasing Kurdish autonomy, than they are by any ideological religious schism.
but at this point there isn't enough information to make many definitive statements, Turkish armed forces claim they control the government while Yildirim claims Erdogan remains in control. we don't even know what elements within the military initiated this whether it be the leaders of the General Staff or an aggrieved division commander in the gendarmerie.
lol, I thought I was gonna be done with this deployment, too. fuck you, turkey
All flights from Istanbul's airport cancelled (not surprisingly)
I heard it was Gulen loyalists
WELL THAT'S NOT SECULAR DANGIT

Yo I'm pretty sure this is how the beginning of that movie with Tom Hanks and Catherine Zeta Jones started.
oh fuck my boss was supposed to fly out of Istanbul, he could be there right now for all I know.
he tried to change his flights after the terror attack a couple weeks ago, dunno if he succeeded or just went ahead when they reopened the airport
