Ocean's Eight

Another all female "reboot" announced.

The Free State of Jones writer and director didn’t reveal to us the film’s entire ensemble cast, which has been previously reported or rumored to star Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, and Elizabeth Banks. One thing Ross did tell us, however, is that his film is very much a continuation of the tone Steven Soderbergh established with his incredibly entertaining Ocean’s remake trilogy.

When we asked Ross how similar the tone and style of Ocean’s Eight is compared to Soderbergh’s trilogy, the director discussed their history together and a bit of what to expect from his film:

I think it’s a pretty similar tone. You know, Steven Soderbergh and I are incredibly close friends, and we would not have done this if we weren’t. I don’t think he would’ve wanted anyone to do it if we weren’t. This is very much an extension and a continuation. He’s a producer on the movie. In one way or another, this has been a 20-year conversation between Steven and I, collaborating in ways the whole world doesn’t know about: I helped him on the previous Ocean’s Eleven films; he shot second unit on The Hunger Games; I’ve done ADR lines for him; and he reads all my scripts. It’s a very long, ongoing collaboration. This, I think, is a very seamless process. We’re different filmmakers, obviously, so there will be those differences, but one of the things I’m drawn to is the amazing tone Steven was able to create, and we discuss that a lot. We discuss the cinema a lot, the shooting style, the rhythm, the editing style, and the music. We discuss it all. I’m in no way trying to reinvent the tone, and I’m thrilled and honored to be extending it. It’s really fun to work with.

I mean, the best thing this movie has going for it is that, while Oceans 11 was pretty fun, 12 and 13 were not that great. And the original Oceans 11 that starred the Rat Pack wasn't that great either lol

It's been quite some time since I last watched it (years), but I just remember wondering why they felt it necessary to have a scene where everyone was sitting around a fire listening to Sammy Davis Jr singing the night before the robberies. Pretty sure the fire was in a trash can and they were under a bridge or something too, but I don't remember lol

as I turned 30 last year my cousin told me that this is around the time that people start fucking up my childhood, this however came too soon. Go back into the box for another 15yrs ocean movies

I actually hope they pull it off, my faith is low. I am a huge Ocean's fan.

I am also skeptical. I would be fine with introducing female characters into the mix; you could even make the big three Clooney-Pitt-Damon characters all female, and it wouldn't matter, but making it all female characters seems gimmicky. But I do have more hope for this than the Ghostbusters film though, for a few reasons.

1) I haven't seen a cringe inducing trailer yet.
2) There's lot of clever heist movies out there; they have a much higher success rate than reinventing an iconic franchise from the ground up.
3) The Ocean's films, while fun and enjoyable (particularly 11), weren't nearly as iconic as Ghostbusters. They have less to live up to.
4) I'm really interested in seeing what Cate Blanchett and Helena Bonham-Carter could do in a film like this.

I'll be rooting for this one, though, and if they manage to make a quality heist flick, I'm in regardless of the gender ratio.
