WENIS

Wenis was the ninth king of the 5th Dynasty. He ruled Egypt from 2356 till 2323 BC. During his reign, successful trade expeditions were conducted with neighboring nations. An inscription raised at Elephantine shows a giraffe that was brought to Egypt with other exotic animals for ancient Egyptians, during Wenis' reign. Another drawing found on a discovered vase shows battle scenes during his reign. There was a major famine during this time. Wenis had two wives, Queen Nebet, who was the mother of Prince Wenisakh, and Queen Khenut. The king was buried in Saqqara in a marvelous tomb with walls covered with the "Pyramid Texts".

The name Pyramid Text applies to a vast array of intricately carved hieroglyphs adorning the antechamber and burial chamber of the 5th dynasty pharaoh Unas (Wenis).

These funerary texts were the precursor to the Coffin Texts and the later well known Book of the Dead. Although the Pyramid Texts were the first recorded funerary texts, they are thought to have been based on utterances that had been in existence for centuries.

This is evidenced by spell 662, which refers to the dead king casting "the sand from his face", an obvious reference to predynastic (3100 BC) burials, where the dead were buried in sandpit graves.

Another reference to an earlier period was spell 355, which says that "The mud bricks have been removed from the tomb". Only tombs of the early dynasties were constructed from mud brick, a method associated with mastaba tombs.
