    Graphics card spontaneous death

I have an Nvidia GeForce 780, and was running both that and integrated graphics with 2 monitors each (was fuckin sweet yo). Intel's favorite way to tell me I need to update their graphics drivers is to cause a crash, so they did that, I updated intel graphics, and now it's like my 780 isn't even seated. It is, though. I checked. It has power, it's seated, and I've tried setting it as default in BIOS. Nothing.

wat do BG Tech? RMA this sucker? it doesnt smell like burned components this time.

edit: worth noting that my card going AWOL happened right after the crash, before i'd had a chance to update intel drivers.

If it shows up in BIOS I dunno what's wrong.

well, it didn't, actually. the slot was visible, but it didn't say this card specifically.

Might help to swap in another power supply or put the card in another pc for another test. If you can actually rma it then that's pretty nice on a two gen old card.

I do have another pc i could use as a testbed, I think, but it doesn't have a hard drive or anything. is that going to matter?

edit: also it had issues of its own i was never able to nail down. so it might have a damaged slot, too.

It would let you know if the card can at least be recognized if it shows up normally in the bios. You'd still need a hdd with windows to know if the card is usable and usable for games, so if you had a spare you can slap windows on (don't need a key since you're not using it longterm) then you'll actually get an answer.

Could also switch slots on your current mobo if it was giving you shit before. With an older/different/known good vid card you can figure that out too.

i was under the impression cards had to be in the first slot, unless there was already something there. is that not the case?

anyway i'll haul out the old PC later, give it a shot.

They can be in any slot as long as it fits properly. It could also be that the card isn't fully seated. You could also modify the shorter pci-express slots (the little 1x/4x slots most boards have) to fit in gfx cards but there's a little risk to the mobo (slicing/melting traces, plastic chips getting stuck, etc) and outside the scope of your problem heh.

So, ran some more tests today: tried the card in both slots. PC wouldn't even try to boot. No reaction at all to anything I did. Pulled the card out, boots just fine. So unless both slots spontaneously fried w/o damaging anything else, it's definitely the card. I'mma proceed with RMA.
