Ready Player One - (Spielberg, March 18 2018)

    Looks terrible.

All Spielberg references removed which basically guts 80% of the references. (Cline is an admitted Spielberg nut)

Anyone who hasn't read the books, they are decently well-written 80's reference porn set in a not-so-distant dystopian future. The writing is ok, the story is predictable, and the movie should be a disaster.

I enjoyed the book but agree with a lot of everyone's gripes: 80's porn. I didn't get to enjoy the 80s (born '87, became self-aware around 91) and most of the references went over my head but still enjoyed where the plot went. I thought to myself while reading that this would make a horrible movie and here we are.

Yeah, the second book was even worse. I'm not surprised this got picked up but Spielberg kinda seems like the wrong choice.

Can I be mad the main character isn't fat/chubby in that image?

I disagree. I think Spielberg is the perfect choice. Half of the appeal of the book is the pop culture references - Adventure, Zork, D&D, Pac-Man, Ghostbusters, War Games, etc. - that will be required for this movie to remotely reflect the book. The strength of the book isn't the plot, characters, story, writing style, or ... whatever, it's the nostalgia. RPO has some cool big ideas but executes them with the deftness of a fifteen year old boy trying to unhook a bra. That makes getting the real world licenses and movie references critical to the success of the movie, and I don't know of a director better suited than Spielberg to be better able to acquire those licenses based both on strength of his name, as well as his ability to draw in a big budget.

Don't get me wrong - I loved the book, but it's not high art by any means. I'm looking forward to the movie and will be there day one, but again - I'm not expecting high art, and I think Spielberg might be the perfect guy to balance the heavy nostalgic factor with an acceptable level of quality film making. He might even make it fantastic.

I am admittedly a little disappointed about that. I honestly think the film might work better with two different actors for each character - one for the real world version, and one for their avatar.

80% of the references are to HIS work which he WON'T use.

This is going to suck cocks.

Hardly. Spielberg's works are an insignificant fraction of the referenced works in RPO. Someone already had this question, it appears, because they already went to the trouble of breaking out all the Spielbergian references. By contrast, here's ALL the movies referenced in the book. That doesn't even include video games, or music, or TV references. And none of Spielberg's works had any sort of important role in the book.

Spielberg played a bigger part in the actual '80s than he did in the book. Unless you know exactly what you are looking for, and exactly the conversation that doesn't take place or is modified to remove a reference to Back to the Future, or Goonies, or Indiana Jones, you likely won't even notice.

The treasure hunt was a "race" I guess. This is going to suck cocks. The trailer is a disjointed mess.
