2018 Blue Gartr Game of the Year Discussion Thread: Fortnite is sooooo last year

It's back for the third year in a row! The mods/admins will have their say in a few weeks, but this is the time for us as a community to shit on each other's GOTY choices!

I tried to include the major GOTY contenders from around the interwebs along with a few surprises!

    This year I played:

    Lost Sphear
    Ni No Kuni 2
    Octopath Traveler
    Dragon Quest XI
    Darksiders 3
    Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

I know I missed some of the big name releases, but gotta say that Dragon Quest XI blew me away! It's one of the best JRPGs I've played. It has fun and lovable characters. While trope-y at times, it also defies expectations a lot as well. GO PLAY IT.

    On this list I've played:

    DQ11
    Spider-man
    Valk Chronicles 4
    Smash Bros Ultimate
    God of War
    Ni No Kuni 2
    Monster Hunter World

Gonna go with DQ11 because it's one of the most satisfying JRPG experiences I've had in a while.

Damn I really fell behind this year, the only title on this list I actually put time into was MHW. I haven't bitten into Red Dead or Smash yet and I haven't gotten far into God of War.

Having said that, I'm still putting time into MHW and its still a blast. Casting my vote for that. Wondering now if I should be looking at Dragon Quest.

I think there is two answers to this question this time.

God of War and RDR2 both had hype behind them and performed up to that task. But that is also the standard that AAA big budget titles should be held to. Neither were as transcendent as something like The Last Of Us, but titles like Spiderman quickly seemed to lose steam after release. That may lend toward marketing over the game itself, but that little extra staying power should be part of that recognition IMHO.

Celeste is the other title worthy of recognition here. Its staying power has been tremendous, and the word of mouth endorsement has been nothing short of extraordinary. It seemed to do everything right and then some, all while combining strong gameplay and little fan touches seamlessly into a cohesive experience.

Octopath deserves an honorable mention for daring to be a little different in the rush to make everything Ultra 4K pretty and managed to put together an amazing HD 16 bit title for a brand new IP. My vote goes to Celeste.

I'll probably get flack for this, and while many of the other titles on that list are good to great for their respective genre, those are the only 4 titles IMHO that should be up for consideration.

MHW easily dominated my video game time this year, so it gets the vote hands down.

God of War, DBFZ, and Crosscode all get honorable mentions

on that list I played Celeste, Monster Hunter, and Octopath. and as much as I love Octopath, I have to give it to Celeste for its sheer brilliance.

Out of this list I’ve only played RDR2 and AC: Odyssey. RDR2 is easily my GOTY, but don’t sleep on AC: Odyssey, it’s still a great game. I really wanna play Spider-Man and God of War after hearing so much good stuff.

God of War hands down. I had not had an emotional attachment to a video game in a long fucking time. I found out i was gonna be a father about 2 weeks before i started my first play through in GoW. So this scene hit me in the feels. Next year I'm gonna have to start teaching an actual person how to not become a shitty person later on in life. Pray for me

How much of the stupid "present day" story crap is in Odyssey? I wish those games just took place in the respective time periods...

Not that much. And there's not really any gameplay in those parts. Pretty sure for all of them you can just immediately jump back in to the past if you don't wanna bother with any modern day lore stuff.

Odyssey is really goddamn good. I haven't cared about AC for a long time but heard enough good things I decided to jump in. The game has also been getting a lot of QOL improvements via patches. Except for one random bug I've encountered which I think is unfixable in my current save, most annoyances I've seen in the game have been patched out or improved upon since release.

Might have to check it out then, those parts always killed the immersion for me

kind of a weak year eh, carried by indies and PS4 offerings. but dug the retro beauty of Octopath, Dead Cells was the first Metroidvania I've sunk my teeth into in decades, Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire scratched that sweet CRPG itch but suffered from comparison to Tyranny and Divinity II, Frostpunk was some tasty city building / survivalist goodness.

that said favorite games were def Battletech and Into the Breach. both pure distillations of gaming as a series of interesting decisions, the former an Armored Core meets X-com mashup sporting a surprisingly compelling restoration narrative, the latter a game of chess with giant mechs and gianter Pacific Rim bugs.

sounds like that'll change when I finally get around to God of War eh but for now a buncha games that lost to Forza.

I believe there are four total trips to present day, none of them lasting very long. One at the very beginning, one about 25%, one halfway, then again for the end.

Celeste for me. Challenging platforming, heartwarming relatable story, and a healthy mod community that I've enjoyed. They have a limited physical release coming in January I believe which I'm gonna try to scoop up. Switch box art is top notch.

My personal game of the year would actually be Detroit: Become Human.

2018 games I played, in order of preference:

    Detroit: Become Human
    Spider-Man
    RDR2
    Vampyr
    Call of Cthluhu

Still have Assassin's Creed Odyssey on my shelf to play, as well.

MHW is the only game on that list I've played this year so I guess thats it.
