    Beer! Glorious Beer Thread!

    It needed to be done.

I begin with a quote from a very wise man: "Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." —Benjamin Franklin

This amazing beverage that is essentially liquid bread is, as a Brussels Beer museum aptly put it, "a wise decision for any occasion." The old myths about America only having piss poor beer and Europe being far and away the best when it comes to creating this wonderful elixir simply is no longer true. Let us beer gurus educate the masses on all that the wonderful world of beer has to offer beyond the typical light beers. Anyways, lets discuss beer!

I open with a list of my favorite common beers/brewers that you can find pretty consistently in stores and some/many bars. Chances are if it is made by any of these brewers, it is a pretty good beer.

Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA - This brewer from Delaware makes a wide variety of beers, all of which are fantastic. The 60 minute is also a very good IPA, but the 90 is even better.

    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2669/...b68eb118fb.jpg

Rogue Dead Guy Ale - Another fantastic brewer, this time from Oregon. The Dead Guy Ale is one of my favorite beers period. It is quite hoppy, but oh so good. There is also a Double Dead Guy Ale that is tough to find. It can be difficult to find either on tap, but it is possible.

    http://humibase.com/images/features/...e%20review.jpg

Smithwicks - Made by Guinness, this is an exceptional beer that is on the top of many of my friend's lists of beer. Not hoppy like the previous two, its just an overall great beer.

    http://extra.listverse.com/amazon/beer/Smithwicks.jpg

Stella Artois - Crafted by Belgian brewer Inbev, this is, as far as I'm concerned, pretty much the best lager you will find. I'm not a big lager fan, but this is a great beer nonetheless.

    http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/w...llaArtois2.jpg

Stone Ruination IPA - This is the most insane IPA I've probably ever had. I saw it in a Publix of all places once, and I'm sure you can find it at a Total Wine or whatever the high end beer/win place is in your area. Stone is from Colorado and in general make some good beers, but I love me some intense IPAs.

Guinness: Favorite favorite favorite beer to have. I'm a picky drinker, and normally when I go to a bar (that doesn't serve guinness), I just have one or two scotch's and call it. Theres a great bar near my house (Geronimos if anyone lives in Broward) that has some of the best Burgers and Fries I've ever had. One of those + a pitcher of Guinness is what I call a good meal.

    http://www.collegian.psu.edu/blogs/s...d/guinness.jpg

Heineken Light: Normally I don't drink light beers. And the first time I've ever had a Heineken I couldn't finish it because of the taste. But I had this the other night and it was really damn good. I drink a lot with a meal, and I can say that this goes really well with a lot of meals.

I like Stella as well. Bought a case of that recently.
Someone also mentioned to me to get a Becks light. Any word on those?

Also, they say Red Wine is great to have with Italian food, and a good beer for everything else.

Yuengling is pretty fantastic, and easily my favorite domestic of those I've tried. Blue Moon is my favorite beer at the moment, though.

Killian's is one of my favorite beers that actually taste like beer. Brewed by Coors, which was originally brewed in Ireland.

Rogue Dead Guy Ale is one of my all time favorites. When served on tap it is one of the top 3 beers I have ever had. Fortunately for me the Yard House here in California carries it on tap.

Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale (Alltech Lexington Brewing and Distilling Co). Awesome bourbon infused ale that's aged in recently decanted barrels from Kentucky bourbon distilleries.

Widmer Hefeweizen - Be my favorite when I feeling extra special for a night. Love the taste out of most beers I had.

Bud Wiser - If I want a cheaper beer this is usually what I go for.

I drank goblet after goblet of this stuff on tap in Paris. Was hooked. Too bad it's a pain to find.

I was recommended this stuff when Leffe was out of stock (happens often).

    It was pretty good actually~

YOU POSTED DEAD GUY ALE. marry me?

but seriously, that's good stuff. we have it on tap at a place called William's here. They have a $3 pint happy hour on Wednesdays, anything domestic. it's fucking fantastic, best deal on beer I know of in the cities. it's where I discovered most of my favorites. lots of hard-to-find brews, and at that price you can't go wrong.

    I also like:
    Hennepin Ommegang
    http://www.benekeith.com/upload/web_...g_Hennepin.jpg
Complex flavors, a bit of fruit but not in a sweet way (which is good for me since I'm not a big fan of stuff like Blue Moon), tastes heavier than it looks. Has a hint of cider if I remember right (been a while). Very good.

    Fat Tire Amber Ale
    http://www.dianefeucht.com/wp-conten...t-Tire-Ale.jpg
Very drinkable, would be a good beer to introduce skeptics with. Pretty light.

    Surly Bender
    http://www.drunkenpolack.com/images/bender.jpg
Surly has a couple different great brews. Bender is one of my favorites. I don't normally go for really dark beers, but Bender is an exception. It has a strong coffee flavor to it which cuts the bitter edge and balances it out pretty damn well. Their IPA is also good.

I'll add more if I think of them.

Leffe and Affligem are excellent as well.

    Forgot to give mention to:

    http://justbeer.files.wordpress.com/...5/hopdevil.jpg
Victory Hop Devil. Really great beer with tons of hop flavor.

    http://theburgerboy.com/wp-content/u...-Tire-Beer.jpg
Fat Tire. Had a friend rave about this and finally was able to have some while in Atlanta. For some reason they don't carry it in Virginia. Hoppy beer with some really interesting porterish undertones to the flavor.

Edit - Yuri beat me to the Fat Tire, so I'm seconding it.

On tap, it's amazing, but it's actually still good from a can and so easy to drink.

I freaking love IPAs and can't have enough of it.

Btw, it's beer week in Philadelphia June 4-13 and alot of bars/pubs are giving out free samples or selling some special microbrew that they don't normally put out to the market. It's great.

Ah yea, Victory makes some good beer, and Flat Tire is definitely a solid beer.

I hate wheat beer lol, there is something fundamentally wrong about them to me ><

I would recommend Smithwicks, Stella, or if you are looking to be a little cheaper, Killians and Amberbock to anyone who is looking to start exploring beer. You gotta work your way up to the stronger Ales and IPAs, those are for the big boys. I have several more beers, but I'll take it slow for now :D

    Edit:

I freaking love IPAs and can't have enough of it.
Have you tried the Stone Ruination IPA? That shit is sweet nectar to any hardcore IPA fan. Definitely not for the feint of heart though.
I just tried this last night, was a pretty tasty and very drinkable but not overly intense IPA from the always solid Abita Brewing Co in Louisiana (wheat beer nuts should be familiar with their Purple Haze, and Turbodog is a very good brown ale).

I can't stand IPA's they are the most disgusting shit to me. I don't understand why anyone would drink them personally. I also don't really like hefeweizens but I can drink them.

My favorite beers are stouts, and porters. I like thick dark beers with good notes of coffee and chocolate.

I also like reds and ambers if I need something lighter. Fat Tire is decent but not my favorite.

I love the fact that I live within 5 minutes of Victory :D Was actually planning on heading over there soon.

Usually I fill it with their Hop Wollop, Hop Devil, Golden Monkey, or some of the other seasonals

I love Yuengling Lager, it's perfect for something easy to drink.
