    Ask the Devs 10/25/10

    http://lodestone.finalfantasyxiv.com...39271b62246c3b

    Q. How can I view my maps?
    A. The main map can be displayed by pressing the M key or by selecting Map from the main menu.

    City-state Map

    1. Coordinates
The numbers on a map's top- and left-hand sides are used to relay location coordinates. For example, the player's coordinates in the above city-state map are 7–6 (7 representing the horizontal axis, 6 the vertical).

    2. Map Info
Up to three names may appear in this window:

    1. [area name] (will always appear)
    2. [sub-area name] (if in an area with multiple levels)
    3. [building/dungeon name] (if inside a building or dungeon)

    3. Map Menu
Up to three names may appear in this window:

    1. [area name] (will always appear)
    2. [sub-area name] (if in an area with multiple levels)
    3. [building/dungeon name] (if inside a building or dungeon)

    4. Close Map
Press this button to close the map.

    5. Player
The player's current location. The arrow indicates the direction the player is facing.

    6. Guild
Each guild is represented by a unique icon. Please note, not every guild will be found in each city-state.
    Adventurers' Guild

    [ Limsa Lominsa ]
Marauders' Guild Fishermen's Guild Blacksmiths' Guild Armorers' Guild Culinarians' Guild

    [ Gridania ]
Archers' Guild Lancers' Guild Conjurers' Guild Botanists' Guild Carpenters' Guild Leatherworkers' Guild

    [ Ul'dah ]
Pugilists' Guild Gladiators' Guild Thaumaturges' Guild Miners' Guild Goldsmiths' Guild Weavers' Guild Alchemists' Guild

    7. Other Important Locations
The following are icons representing locations such as weapon shops, inns, and transportation facilities. Please note that some facilities may not be found in some city-states.
Shop Inn Ferry Docks Chocobo Stables

    8. Landmarks
Gates, main thoroughfares, and other major landmarks will often be marked on maps.

    9. Map Switch Icon
Indicates a location that, if passed, will result in a change of maps. This is most commonly found on stairwells, city-state gates, dungeon entrances, etc.

    10. Aetheryte
Indicates the location of an aetheryte crystal. In city-states, the crystals are usually found in what are known as aetheryte plazas. In the field, they can be found in city-state-run facilities known as aetheryte camps.

    Field Map

    11. Aetherial Gates
Indicates the location of an aetherial gate.

    12. Quest Destination
Indicates the general location of a current quest. Icons representing target enemies will also appear when applicable.

    Q. An NPC marked something on my map, but I can't find it. Where should I be looking?
    A. Currently, NPC markers can be viewed on a player's journal map, accessed via the Journal option on the main menu. There are, however, plans to move NPC markers to the main menu with the next version update.

    Q. The opening cutscene is finished and I'm tired of reading dialogue. I want to go and slay me some beasties...but I can't find my way out of the city! How do I get outside?
    A. The following are videos of the quickest routes to the aetheryte camps nearest each city-state.
From the Drowning Wench in Limsa Lominsa to Camp Bearded Rock
From the Blue Badger Gate to Camp Bentbranch
From the Nald Gate to Camp Black Brush
    Enemies
    Q. How do I determine an enemy's strength?
    A. Moving the target cursor to an enemy will not only display its name, but a colored icon that represents the target's relative strength.

Red : Very tough (there are several shades of red, the darker the red, the tougher the opponent)
    Orange : Tough
    Yellow : Even match
    Green : Decent challenge
    Blue : Easy prey

*If the player is in a party, the icon will adjust to the strength of the party. The same is true if the target is in a party.
    Class Rank
    Q. Why is leveling classes important?
    A. The following are examples of the benefits awaiting those who continue to raise their levels:

    * New chapters in the main scenario will become available
    * Class-specific quests will become available
    * Higher-rank class-specific guildleves will become available
    * The effectiveness of weapons and gear will increase
    * New actions and abilities will become available

The following is a chart showing the timing at which new quests become available:
    Class Rank Quests Guildleves
Main Scenario Class Quests Regional Local
    5 -- -- -- New
    10 New -- -- New
    13 -- -- New --
    15 New -- -- New
    20 New New (*1) -- New
    23 -- -- New (*1) --
    25 -- -- -- New
    26 New -- -- --
    30 -- New -- New
    33 -- -- New (*1) --
    34 New -- -- --
    35 -- -- -- New
    36 -- New -- --
    38 New -- -- --
    40 -- -- -- New
    42 New -- -- --
    45 -- -- -- New
    46 New -- -- --

*1. To trigger class quests, players must have already completed the main scenario quest that is introduced upon achieving class rank 15.
*2. Currently, regional guildleves for Disciples of the Land rank 13 and higher are only available in the following locations:

    Class City-state
    Rank 20 Rank 30 Rank 40
    Miner Limsa Lominsa Ul'dah Gridania
    Botanist Ul'dah Gridania Limsa Lominsa
    Fisher Gridania Limsa Lominsa Ul'dah

    * In conjunction with the version update planned for late November, Disciple of the Land levequests for all ranks will become available in each city-state.

The list of when new quests become available is nice, though that chocobo stables is down as an important location on maps is quite ironic atm. This reads more like part of a manual than a Q&A, though. "How do I use maps?" is basic info :/

They're map coordinate explanation has errors making it confusing.

For example, the player's coordinates in the above city-state map are 7–6 (7 representing the horizontal axis, 6 the vertical).
The player is standing at 7 vertical and 6 horizontal.

    Edit:

Nevermind. I see what they did. I am thinking the top line is vertical because I follow a vertical trajectory to get the coordinate. I think the left line is horizontal because I follow a horizontal trajectory to get the coordinate. BUT, they're calling the left line vertical because it is a vertical line, and the top line as the horizontal line, because it is horizontal.

So confusing! Good thing I am not a math or science major.

The info about the different shades of red depending how tough the mob was new to me.

To be a true hardcore XIV player you now need to get a CRT or an IPS panel monitor with pro level color accuracy or you'll never know just how red that mob that just one-shot you really was.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

This would all be irrelevant if they just made one set of coords letters again. ><

semi dissapointed that there is no rank 50 guild leves yet, at least it makes me lose motivation to rank up to 40+, I'll just do another job after I get rank ~35.

I wonder what they're going to do with the story content before level cap gets raised?

Would be odd to ram a million class quests to the 46-50 range...

Maybe they'll lower the rank needed to trigger some of these quests instead.

Like if the quests come in these intervals now:

    15 New
    20 New
    26 New
    34 New
    38 New
    42 New
    46 New

In the next few updates they might be changed like this:

    15
    20
    26
    30
    34
    38
    42
    46 New
    50 New

    And later on:

    15
    20
    23
    26
    30
    34
    38
    42
    44
    46 New
    48 New
    50 New

Ahh, exciting to see where they go with this.. They may also just focus on implementing class quests & GL's to 40~ and 46~ range first though.

I'm not sure what the point of monsters checking higher than orange is at all. If you're solo and it's any shade of red, you're boned. If you're in a party and it's still any shade of red, you're all boned.

the colour con thing is nothing but totally retarted.

A deep red mob that will one shot a Tank turns blue if just enough ppl of the same level join a party. blue is easy prey but this mob will still rape in that case your complet party....

like in ffxi, the mobs colour should con your level - monster level and not change colour if more ppl join the party.

  19. #19

The main problem is decided what kinds of red will fuck you up. There are some red mobs I can solo and ones that will destroy me (at 24). In a party, reds will generally fuck you up, but in a 15 man we've gone around killing all the reds we saw without much trouble.

    How about they just tell us what level the mobs are ^_^;
