if you use the mcpatcher you don't need to patch every time you want to use a hi-res texture, just patch it once and you can switch at will. It's only Xau's that requires you to patch every time, iirc

here's the link for what I used, worked perfectly and took like 30 seconds:

Has Notch even mentioned anything pertaining to the add-on support lately? Last I heard of it, Minecraft was still in alpha.

Ok so question regarding updates and new block types:

I know that when a new kind of block is introduced (lapis lazuli, for example), you have to either start a new world, or travel far away from your base to get it to appear underground. I guess my question is that looking at my settlement in Minecraft Xray, I see areas that aren't very far from my base that haven't been created yet (so they're just blank), but if a new block is introduced would I have to go even further away to get them to appear? I guess my question is if all newly created areas will have new blocks, or if the areas immediately surrounding an older area will still be governed by the same ore/block distribution patterns.

Has to be a chunk that has never been loaded before the update to get the new stuff, sometimes stuff nearby was never loaded just cuz you've never walked that way, simple as that

ok cool that's what I figured, I think I'm going to just never walk west from my base so I don't have to go that far if they ever add anything new lol

Semi related question, as I have been looking into recent developments and messing about in Single Player a bit more lately...

Would using something like MCEdit work for what Atreides is asking? Say he has his very developed and full "World 1" then a super kickass update comes along and introduces Magic Awesome Blocks.

    Would he be able to:
    1) Update Minecraft
    2) Create as yet uncreated World 2
    3) Load World 2 in MCEdit
    4) Import World 1 into World 2
    5) Save World 2
    6) Enjoy Magic Awesome Blocks in World 2 which just so happens to contain World 1?

I have difficultly believing it would be this simple, and I kind of think that MCEdit has to have a size limit to import sections. Just curious as it does kind of suck that there is no way other than going to an entirely new area to take advantage of updates and their new additions in an 'old world'.

(PS, only experiece myself is creating a world in ZOMG and then importing it to a .dat World with MCEdit. it actually kind of sucks, as it is hard to line it up right and you get huuuuuuuge chasms of empty death.)

Not too sure about mcedit, but in my world's Nether I have a covered path leading a pretty decent distance away, that way if I need to generate a new chunk I can just build a portal in that spot and it'll be a new area to mine or build a settlement.

there is a way to sorta edit your maps as the online server i was on for a long time had theres chopped up several times to be renewed with goodies, im not sure if the admin used mcedit or what but it is possible

Question: So my friend finally convinced me to buy the game and I'm still kind of plinking around not really knowing what the fuck I'm doing. I decided to hop on the BG server to see what people had done and then panicked that I was going to ruin someone's home. Should I stay off the BG servers until I'm a little more experienced with the game? I mean I'm certainly not going to ruin someones place on purpose, but even fucking around on a public server I accidentally blew a hole in the side of someone's home with a creeper

If it looks made by someone don't touch it, if you blow it up repair it.

I'm trying to set up a server and I'm having a little trouble. I have an amazing connection (right now 48 down, 12 up, but usually it's double that) and 8 gigs of ram (I enabled 1.5 for the server) but I'm still being told that the server is incredibly laggy. Is there anything I'm missing? Does using a server rapper drastically increase performance?
