FFXI is coming up on a crossroads... They can continue to release quality content, and keep their userbase - and maybe even win back old players - or they can finish abyssea and give us maybe 2 token minor updates a year, and let the game slowly die. Abyssea is the most fun I've had in the game since the timespan of RoZ through ToAU's good content (Assault/Salvage)...
Character progression is key in this... WotG offered very little in this... with most of the rewards coming from a boring system that required constant upkeep to maintain your progress (Campaign). As long as SE adds goals of varying difficulty/effort (not everyone wants to spend the massive amount of time to get a relic/mythic/empyrean) - they'll maintain a strong FFXI player base.
Hey anyone remember when EQ2 was released and EQ completely died?
That was around the time when UO bit the dust, iirc?
Anyone remember the Star Wars CCG that came out in 1995? It went completely out of production around 2001, so obviously it is a dead game that nobody plays.
AND DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT MAKING UP YOUR OWN MIND ABOUT WHAT GAMES TO ENJOY

Does that guy on the left represent "Old Advanced?"
Wonder if they are gonna help fix my problem

I believe I can help solve your problem.
Stop loot-whoring.
Set aside coins of glory/advancement. Set aside RDM feet, and your THREE +2 pieces. Set aside BRD legs/head seals, set aside THF feet seals. Chuck the rest, congratulations, you just got 31 spaces back and nothing of value was lost.
