Geography Project Help- The Language and Vernacular of the Internet

So for my world regional geography class, we have to do a project where our topic has to fall under the umbrella of "The Geography of Language". My first choice was the language of online gaming, but the jackass that sat in front of me picked it -.-; I went with my second choice, just a broad language of the internet/communication through Forums.

EDIT: There is now a short 10-question survey available here. Thanks for you time :3

most of those examples you listed are just memes and don't have anything to do with "internet language"

    don't confuse culture with language.

    What a completely misinformed statement.

If you define language as any form communication between two or more people (which was the definition given in the assignment), then internet culture itself would become apart of the language of the internet. Just think about how many people post replies to threads with a Captain Picard face palm image. The image itself communicates the emotion of the poster at that exact moment and it's able to be interpreted by everyone that reads it. While most of the stuff I posted were in fact memes, the main reason for the post itself was because I'm trying to narrow down what I should include while keeping it interesting.

That's more or less correct, language IS culture(and culture is language).

That said, if I might suggest something slightly more interesting(and less eyeroll worthy tbh), how about examining internet language use by different regions

    Example:

    Laughing:

    English: lol
    Japanese: wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
    French: mdr

Internet slang is very very different in different regions.

ooooo good idea.... I didn't even think about other regions. I think I even had a lecture in my hs French class about slang now that I think about it. Thanks!

First thing that comes to my mind when you say that it is about Geography of Language is more how people have different terms for the same thing within the same language. Like pop/soda, fountain/bubbler, milkshake/cabinet etc. I'm not sure how internet terms really relate to that, you're basically making a list of memes, but how do those relate to geography per se? Though I know you said someone else "took" gaming, one idea that I had is how even within populations of the same gaming community people have "regional dialects" by server. I was on a few FFXI servers and some of the things that come to mind are "PST" "toon" and different servers sort of come about different ways of shouting in a "normalized" way for things like Nyzul Isle runs for example.

Thank you very much ^_^ from just today, I've gotten a pretty decent sample already, and some of the responses to the short answers are hilarious.

The other day where I work I was doing a review of some statistics and the number 9200 was pointed out to me on the list. I said "Yes! Over 9000!". Then I broke up laughing. Needless to say, I got some very strange looks.

language is a part of culture and people dont ask, "what culture do you speak?" I fail to see what I said wrong.

That reminds me of yesterday when we were talking in class about a bomb threat at my school and one guy went 'Well you know, when I first heard about it, it was just kind of an el oh el for me' and the whole class just got this 'you did not just say that' look XD
