I'm pretty sure they have access to our music, and can watch dubbed american cartoon on TV. How popular is it? I don't know, but it's not impossible for them to catch some of the "obscure" references

Japanese people can understand English about as well as a US kid who has had Spanish classes all through Middle and High School.

I can't speak Spanish fluently, but if I'm around people speaking it, I can pick it out better and better within an hour or so.
