So they dropped jumping in favour of a sprint button...., those fences and random rocks are going to be a pain in the ass if there is no auto-jump in its place.

They took out jumping completely? I find that kind of hard to believe.

Dont remember seeing that they removed jumping.. just that you cant level by jumping all over hell.

I kinda like the idea of the level system. You level up in what you use. Guessing thats how they will handle improving stats..via the skill trees from level stuff like Blade, Heavy Armor, or Magic stuff.

I don't think they removed jumping, that would be downright stupid on their part especially considering the rocky terrain that Skyrim is suppose to be. I wanna jump cliffs!!

Sounds a lot more like they removed them as skills. IE, in Oblivion you sprint or jump and get skillups in athleticism or acrobatics. In Skyrim, you can just sprint or jump, but you don't level anything by doing it. At least, that's what it sounds like to me.

I think that's right, and it was a necessary change given that all skills now count toward experience gain. randomly leveling up from Acrobatics or Athletics, two skills you have no choice but to use constantly, would be annoying.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim “mostly a DirectX 9 game.” DirectX 11 support a possibility
Game director Todd Howard has been talking about the PC version of the game will compete with its console competitors. Aside from better quality textures and higher resolutions, he says Skyrim will “looks the same” on PC as it does on consoles. However, possible DirectX 11 support further down the line could give the PC version a significant graphical advantage.

Howard was spoke to Eurogamer about the PC version of Skyrim. “It scales up in all the ways you would expect. We author our art really high res. There are little things we do with all of our games on the PC. With the PC the texture sizes are going to be as big as you want to make them, and you can pump the resolution up, obviously.”

When it comes to comparisons with the console versions, Howard says “the game looks the same. The benefit we get when you’re playing a PC game is you’re sitting this far away [moves hands in front of his face]. At home when you’re on your console you’re usually sitting six to eight feet away.” He adds that Skyrim is “mostly a DirectX 9 game in terms of how the shaders work.”

Howard does say that there’s chance that advanced DirectX 11 support further down the line. “When it comes to DirectX 11 there are things they get us for free, like performance gains. You’re going to get performance gains out of it versus an older version.

“But the specifics DX11 does, like tessellation and all that kinda stuff, we aren’t taking advantage of that right now. That doesn’t mean we won’t in the future. We aren’t right now because we want to author it so it looks great.”

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is set for a worldwide release on November 11. It’s looking pretty amazing for a DirectX 9 game. Check out the latest batch of screens to see for yourself.

Elder Scrolls: Skyrim – your questions answered
Last week, I had a chance to speak to Bethesda Softworks Game Director Todd Howard about their new, massive RPG, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Before I did, I asked the PC Gamer community on Twitter for questions. They responded quickly, with dozens of great questions about horsies, dragons and terrible voice acting.

We’ll have a full interview with more quotes in the coming weeks, but using the information gathered from the presentation and my conversation with Howard afterwards, I’ve answered your questions below.

Imperial Creed: Have Bethesda hired more than four voice actors this time?

Yes, thank goodness. “It used to be an issue with disc space,” says Howard. “On Oblivion we were literally running out of room on the disc for voice. We’ve since solved that. There are better compression techniques, so we’re not really limited by the physical media as much as how long it takes to record it.”

They’re spending more time and money on it this time around. The voice actors are better, there’s more of them, and they’re working with more voice directors in Hollywood this time around. In the presentation I saw, that showed in in your conversations.

BigTomHatfield: “Are there any ideas from the modding community for Morrowind and Oblivion that have influenced the design of Skyrim?”

Yeah, the Oblivion mod “Better Bows”. It made arrows more powerful, more likely to kill in a single hit, and balanced it by making it slower to draw the arrow back in the first place. Skyrim takes that pretty much wholesale, and the demonstration we saw had a lot of bow and arrow action.

CrisisXVII: Can the player ride a dragon?

Sadly not. There might be something “on the edge of that,” said Howard during the presentation, but it’s unlikely to fulfil your Neverending Story dreams.

TheRealJefe: Will there be horse armor again? And will we have to, gleefully I might add, pay for it?

It’s not even confirmed yet if there will be horses. They’re in there just now, but “horses have come a long way in games” since Oblivion, said Howard, and they want to make sure they’re good.

Pete Hines, Bethesda’s Vice President, did joke that, “If there’s no horses, what will we sell armour for?”

Chico_Arazi: Will Levelling work like in Oblivion? Will monsters scale up? /hopes it doesn’t

Levelling works like it did in Fallout 3, not like in Oblivion. That means that some areas will scale, some areas won’t, and the level of enemy’s in each area will be fixed in place when you first visit that part of the world.

timdungate: Skyrim’s mod support. How will it be?

Skyrim is being powered by what Bethesda are calling the Creation Engine, and on launch day or shortly after they’ll release the Creation Kit. It should give modders all the tools they’ve become used to from previous Bethesda games like Oblivion and Fallout.

Batsphinx: Can you kill a horse on top of a mountain and watch its broken body tumble down for hundreds and hundreds of metres?

Assuming horses are in the game at all, yes, but the mountains look considerably steeper than anything in Oblivion. Expect your faithful steed to fall fast, sicko.

UberSprode: Will your inventory be able to show more than 3 items at once? And actually be made with the PC in mind?

Yes, more than three, though they’re certainly not focusing on simply jamming more things on the screen at once. Skyrim’s new inventory is designed to be slicker than that, and there are a few cool things about it.

The first is that every item in your inventory is shown as a 3D model, which can be zoomed in on and rotated. It’s a nice, flashy bit of design that shows off the detail the art team are pouring into the items and weaponry. Which would be fine in itself. But in the dungeon we were shown, the player solved a puzzle by studying an item in his inventory for a set of symbols needed to unlock a door.

You can also bookmark spells and items in your inventory you use regularly, making them easy to find even when you’re encumbered by pockets stuffed with calipers.

ballyhewe: What kind of supercomputer will their new game engine require to run smoothly?

It’s designed to run on an XBox 360, so any even vaguely modern PC will run it just fine. If you do have a beastly PC though, you’ll be able to enjoy higher resolution, bigger textures, and all the other lovely features you’ve come to expect. If you’re running DirectX 11, you’ll get some performance gains, but their desire for “parity of performance” across all platforms prevents them from using any of its unique features. Still, the game will be best on PC.

altfuture: Are dungeons as repetitive as they were in Oblivion?

Oblivion’s dungeons were mostly designed by just two level designers. Skyrim has eight or nine, and while the dungeon we saw had plenty of the same rocky tunnels we’ve come to love, they also had moments of real beauty.

We’ll have more on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim in PC Gamer UK issue 227, on sale May 11.

Skyrim has 60,000 lines of dialogue, new dragon shouts revealed, horses confirmed
More Skyrim details have broken in the latest issue of Official Playstation Magazine, with more information on the game’s dragons, dragon shouts, dialogue and travel options. Also revealed: horses, revamped city guard and more. Read on for the full scoop.

We already know that Skyrim will have UNLIMITED DRAGONS, and that their attacks will happen dynamically as you explore the world. OPM also reveal that wounded dragons will be unable to fly, meaning you can trap a dragon in a ground fight if you think you stand a chance of winning the fight.

Killing dragons in Skyrim earns your character dragon shouts, special abilities that make use of the language of the dragons to deal damage to your enemies. Newly confirmed dragon shouts include “Yol Toor”- Fire breath, “Iiz Slen” – Ice crystals, “Strun Bah Qo” – Lightning Storm and couple more that can slow down time and let you move speedily in one direction.

There’s also been a much needed change to the guard system. The very moment you misbehaved in Oblivion, the guards would turn into immortal, all-knowing avatars of justice. No matter how far you travelled from the scene of the crime, the guards in every new town would instantly know what you’d done, and would practically teleport towards you to make an arrest. Skyrim will thankfully tone this down a bit. Guards will be separated into different regions. If you commit a crime in one area, guards in a nearby area won’t necessarily know about it.

    Now for some crafting news:

There will be 13 types of ore!

    So there’s that.

Also confirmed: horses. There was some uncertainty about whether horses would make it into Skyrim, as Bethesda weren’t entirely happy with the way they turned out in Oblivion. OPM say that horses will indeed be a part of The Elder Scrolls V, and will “actually handle like horses this time.” If you don’t fancy riding around on horseback the whole time, there will also be a Morrowind style fast travel system that will let you use carriages to reach any major settlement from the start of the game. You can also skip straight to locations you’ve already discovered without the need for a carriage.

Bethesda have told OPM that Skyrim will feature over 60,000 lines of voiced dialogue. There will be more voice actors this time round as well, to the enormous relief of anyone who spent 40 hours listening to Oblivion’s Orcs.

Finally, alongside the previously mentioned Dark Brotherhood, there will also be a Thieves Guild, a Fighter’s Guild (The Companions), and a Mages Guild (The College of Winter’s Hold). In Oblivion these provided their own insular quest lines, but in Skyrim they will interact with one another and the main story.

Judging from the hundred foot tall Skyrim poster glued to the side of a nearby LA hotel, Skyrim should be getting a big showing at E3 next week. If you can’t wait ’til then, you can always stick the Skyrim trailer on a loop until Tuesday arrives.

This game looks amazing, pretty dman excited. I've never played an Elder Scrolls game but I looooved Fallout 3, New Vegas, etc. and they seem somewhat similar. Can I expect that sort of epic feel that Fallout offers based off of the older Elder Scrolls games?

Help me out man, I've played abt 20 hours of Fallout, then just stopped. I can't get into the game for some freaking reason, and I can't figure out why. It's just not fun for me =/

I loved the previous Fallout games though, those were the shit.

And it looks like they're going to use a lot of mechanics that worked with fallout in skyrim -- i.e., some areas will have scaled enemies, some will not (as opposed to just one or the other). They've been pretty up front with what they'll use from the fallout series.

You should definitely look into Oblivion. GoTY edition runs about $25-30? I never completed it due to cheating my ass off and losing interest, the skill system was a complete fucking chore, but pretty fun shit otherwise. It's a nice change of pace from Fallout's ravaged wastelands.

That 7 minute preview was the tits though; the animations in TP mode look fucking fantastic.

The Elder Scrolls series in my opinion is much better than the Fallout series. Don't get me wrong I've enjoyed Fallout but it just doesn't compare in my opinion.

Exact opposite here. I loved Fallout 3/NV but I was never crazy about Oblivion/Morrowind, though I'll definitely give Skyrim a shot.
