GTX 460, unable to run adequately

I just put a new 460 in a system, and when trying to run FFXIV, it won't run very well unless everything is turned down.

One thing that seemed odd was when turning on AA higher than 4x msaa, the game would either run, but the screen would be completely black aside from the widgets (csaa), or it would have really low FPS (msaa 8x+).

Is that normal for the card? It's a 1GB card and the system itself has 4GB of RAM, which I thought would be plenty. I haven't had a chance to test the card in another system or with other games yet, but would like other opinions.

that is not normal performance; however, it is not uncommon for people to not get their card working properly for 14. if you haven't yet, update your drivers online.

Should be able to run it very nice with that card. I'm using just a 1gb GTS 250 and can run with everything at max except shadows, AA, AO and DoF. This is disheartening though because i'm planning to get 2 460s for SLI.

That's very odd. I have a GTX 460 1GB and can run the game at almost max settings (except max draw distance and Ambient Occlusion) at 1980x1020 resolution. I have around 40-50 fps in town and max fps outside town.

Do you have the newset drivers for the card? It's really odd, the card should work pretty well with the game.

My PC also has 4GB RAM and that was never a problem. Processor I am using is an i7 870 @ 2.93Ghz.

Well this sucks cuz I think I shorted the one mobo out swapping cards and adjusted the heatsink.

Relevant info for this topic anyway:

I tried this card in both systems with the same results. I'm really disappointed because my 5770 is running better than this card right now. I think my 4860 did better even.

The first system is a Phenom II 955 at stock clocks with 4GB ram. The second is an i5 750 at 3.4 Ghz with 6GB of ram. On both systems, the card will not run at all with AA higher than 2x, does not showing the game at all with any csaa setting, and I believe I had to turn down the texture drawing.

I put an RMA in for the card, so hopefully it doesn't take too long and it was just a bum card.

    Thanks for your input everyone.

Bum card is probably it. My 768mb 460 runs everything on high with 4x msaa at 1980x1080.

Other specs are phenom ii x6 1055t @3.5GHz and 4GB ram.

Another thing I have happening with this card, is when in windowed mode, if I minimize the game I get the "Directx Device not found" message and it crashes. Please tell me that is not normal for this model or there is a workaround?

I also run windowed mode and will sometimes get the "device not found" crash when minimizing, I think it may be the game just randomly dropping the ball

Did you originally have an ATi card installed and move over to the GTX 460?

I used Driver Sweeper to remove the old drivers before installing the card and new drivers

    then format and reinstall windows.
This will make sure everything is in default state. (who knows what thos ATI people did!)
j/k about ati sabotaging nvidia if GPU are changed but you should reformat and do a fresh install to get rid of any problems.

Well i just upgraded to the GTX460 SC. I bumped up the general drawing quality from 8 to 10. As soon as i got in game the frame rate was horrible, so i put it back down to 8 and it runs 59-60 in the field and 40-50 in towns. I know this is unrelated to the OP but just thought i'd post it. What's weird though is i went from 2xMSAA to 8x CSAA and not really any performance hit, just that general draw quality seems to kill it.

I got a 460 right when they came out and it runs just fine for me on 4xMSAA. If I go up to 8x it starts getting a little bit tough, but I think that's because I'm running on a Core 2 Duo and it's just a little bit too much stress.

I also just upgraded to the newest drivers (260.99 WHQL), will post my card's game-specific settings when I get home later.

Mine runs fine with AA and shit in the field (constant 60 fps), GPU usage drops like mad in the city but Im used to it already.

Just wanted to update this in case anyone else is look: I got the card back and the first one was apparently defective. The replacement is a lot better.

Well, I didn't want to create a new thread for a problem with the same card.

I'd like to know if someone can help me with the following problem. Images are easier to understand than words, so here's one:

I'd love to get rid of these weird shadows, but I can't figure out what setting to adjust (yeah, I'm a complete noob when it comes to this kind of stuff).

I too have that strange shadow issue. All drivers up to date, tried rolling them back and it's still the same. Really interesting since you have an NVIDIA and I have an ATI..

I too have the same issue, it's not as blatant as your SS, but its apparent. HD6950, Latest drivers (think its July 29th release)
