Developer Diary: The Technology Behind Performance

Posted: Dec 16, 2010 | Views: 224,663 Raising the bar of video game realism, facial expressions, motion capture, and 3-D rendering all come together in the immersive effect of the L.A. Noire story.
Seriously, this is bad fucking ass. I know there's already a L.A. Noire thread but this is really more just super interesting than anything else, whether you're looking forward to the game or not. I think Kenny from Mad Men actually fits this role p. well, too.

Only problem I have with the technology is that the facial/voice-acting is done separate from the full body motion capture. It leads to times where it feels like the head was just pasted on because of the two performances conflicting with one another.

Granted, I would have loved for Quantic Dream to have used such a system with Heavy Rain as that game had lots of uncanny/awkward animations in it. Perhaps next time for them at any rate, as there was lots of room for improvement on that game.
(they used the 'little balls all over an actors face' method which doesn't capture any of the subtle movement, nor wrinkles at all)

Yeah I can see that, they just really sold me on it in the video when both making the models look so realistic as well as having a purpose for it that involves the game's mechanics. It's one of those games I'll have to try just to see what the experience is like even if it turns out to be wholly terrible.
