Final Fantasy VIII or Final Fantasy IX

Alrighty, I'm pretty much a long timer lurker, who never posts, but I thought I'd make a thread. I'm planning on starting either Final Fantasy VIII or IX today once I get back from the gym. I've played both of them multiple times, and don't care about which one I start. I'm just feeling nostalgic towards them. So, choose which one I play

9 is the most underrated Final Fantasy game IMO, the amount of gameplay and story... it's up there with FF7 and FF6

Underrated is the wrong term... I've never seen anyone talking bad about FFIX.
It just happens to be a FF with a pure Medieval setting and deformed characters in the midst of a bunch of FFs with sci-fi settings and non-deformed characters, so it's harder to compare to them (i.e. Squall/Cloud/Lightning, Aerith/Yuna/Tifa etc. comparisons happen very often, but you can't really compare characters like Quina and Eiko to anyone else), therefore it's usually not mentioned as often as FFVII and the others.

Both are good, but I personally prefer VIII since it has a unique (although kinda broken, battle-wise) gameplay.

VIII hands down. I played both, but dont really remember 9, but 8 I won't ever forget. Might be biased because 8 was my first one, but it's amazing.

Edit: Now I'm curious to retry 9 since everyone in this thread speaks highly of it. I remember 7 8 and 10 so specifically, but 9 I barely remember anything about it.

It's funny you mention that because I know a LOT of people who think VIII is far better than IX. I'm exactly the opposite - I love IX and can't stand VIII to the point where I'm unable to play it for more than the first 20 minutes.

How come? Kinda disappointing that magic is flat out useless with the exception of a few spells that are 9/10 junctioned so you deplete stats to cast the spell (Aura/Triple/Ultima) and that physical damage is far superior to magic. Story-wise though, fantastic.
