Everything you just said reinforces the idea that having a feature back isn't particularly important in the NFL, as lots of teams are successful splitting carries between a number of decent but not spectacular guys. That's the point.

I think you are looking at it the wrong way. Teams are splitting carries BECAUSE they dont have a good premier rusher, and I think every team would take a guy that can have 500+ carries in a season instead to free up a roster spot or 2. Adrian Peterson is as complete a RB as there is, as he gives you looks in terms of speed, power, and finesse, when other teams use 2-3 players to show those looks.

ask any coach in the nfl and they will tell you roster spots are fucking precious. I would love if the pats could go with 3 RB instead of 4-5, personally.

Cap space is pretty precious, too. If you can spend the money on talent at other, harder to find positions at the cost of 1-2 extra roster spaces, that's generally going to be worth it.

It's not so much that he's wrong that RBs aren't as a whole as valuable as they were back in the day but it's the combination of his delusions that is frustrating. Discrediting the value of a featured back is just stupid they do the job of 2 men (shared carries) better than both the men combined. They are brilliant play makers that other teams need to constantly keep in mind.

It's hard to comment on this without seeing numbers though. I mean, the average pay for the top 2 RB for teams might be ~10m total, which is about what a featured back gets. CJ upped the ante a bit, but not too much.
