New question for my computer (the other question was for my wife's computer, and she is getting hers built now because of your suggestions):

    This is my computer:

    Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1 (7601.win7sp1_gdr.130318-1533)
    Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
    System Manufacturer: Gateway
    System Model: FX6831
    BIOS: Default System BIOS
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 860 @ 2.80GHz (8 CPUs), ~2.8GHz
    Memory: 8192MB RAM
    Available OS Memory: 8152MB RAM
Card name: ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series
    Display Memory: 4070 MB
    Dedicated Memory: 1011 MB
    Shared Memory: 3059 MB
I would like a new video card because I believe mine qualifies as "pretty shit", so your wise suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What model is it, exactly? A 5870 is still a good mid-level video card, and 5850 isn't bad either.

I have tried to find out a couple of times, but my computer doesn't recognize it as anything more than "5800 series". I have the case open because I was cleaning it yesterday, so I can double check tonight.

I am willing to put 200-300 into the video card. I judge things by how it plays WoW mostly, and it can run 60+ FPS on mostly "good" settings, and I would like to get those settings a lot higher with 60+ FPS.

If you want to spend 200-300 on a GPU I would recommend right in the middle of that price point and get a gtx 760.

A 7870 would also be a good choice in that price range. I can run FFXIV on maximum at 45-60fps only dipping to 45 when tons of stuff is going on during fates. Tomb raider and all the other new PC games I have played run at 60fps on maximum.

Honestly... I updated my drivers for my card... and now everything runs awesome. I really don't understand how that could happen, but it was awesome. I didn't realize that updated drivers make that much of a difference.

It never really made a difference for FFXI.

Does anyone know of a decent >$20 keyboard? Anything with laptop/chiclet style keys that can handle more than four simultaneous buttons. The university I attend has some cheap dell keyboards that I liked, but I couldn't find them online.

Anyone one have a suggestion on HDTV tuner cards that would work with CentOS 6.4?

Usually I had to roll back my drivers for FFXI...

So I think my tb C drive is dieing. Windows reported a disk error, and check disk (which took like 2 days) found a decent amount of bad sectors. And when attempting to use the computer many, many things will just hang for seconds or even minutes.

Does this indeed sound like my drive is dieing? I've backed it up on a portable tb drive I got recently so I should be safe with data. I'm about 6/7 months past the 3 years manufacturers guarantee so I'm shit out of luck there though.

wouldn't be a bad idea to look at the s.m.a.r.t data with something like speedfan.

Welp, I've ordered a 1tb WD Black from newegg to replace my failing hitachi C drive. Also picked up a Kingston 120gb v300 ssd from microcenter for ~97$ after tax and installed w7 on that. Completely forgot to buy a 2.5 to 3.5 adapter though, lol. When the WD drive arrives I'll probably recover my old c drive from the back up, copy paste all the non-OS stuff off, format, and copy paste stuff back on.

I'll check out the smart data tomorrow probably, along with installing basic drivers/updates/ffxiv onto the ssd lol.

lol, my ssd is just sitting at the bottom of my case. I have an adapter sitting on top of my case. Not worth the effort to put it in.

I have been having issues with video playback on all my recordings.

I have tried Afterburner, Bandicam, and Fraps. I have also tried Windows Media Player and VLC.

My videos always stutter ever 5 seconds or so. I have tried numerous settings. This is what I use now. I record to a separate Hard Drive.

Nvm with my issue. I downloaded Magix Video easy HD and my videos play stutter free with it.
